So, as I have been to the garage, got my 17.5 PHVA Carburettor put on and my 12mm Weber taken off. Had my fuel leak sorted, new fuel line put in and a few other odd jobs.

I may have this wrong, and most definitely needs some advice...
The mechanic says I may need to change my rollers to compensate the exhaust and I need to find out what size/weight they are? Then I need to get hold of some so he can change them. He also mention something about clutch springs?

When I rode it home, it was very boggy on pull off. It was superb during mid riding but going up the hill was boggy and shitty again. He said that he had put in the 74 jet.

I have shed loads of jets. Would you guys also recommend up jetting. maybe try the 80 then 82 and have a play. would this compensate the awful bogginess.

Please help me Vespa nuts!!

Is your vespa a 2stroke? if so you do need to match the rollers to your expansion chamber ie your exhaust
and yes you might need some stronger clutch springs and they a barsteward to fit

what kind of pipe do you have on it?
This is from memory, but if you put on an expansion chamber, you go to about a 5 roller and use the middle level springs, Yellow if it's a Leo Vince pipe and spring. An expansion chamber has a definite powerband, and you need to tune it to stay "on the pipe".
It almost sounds overjetted, because if it's underjetted, it will run crazy fast until the top end melts.

Good looking pipe. I have the NextR on my Eton, but I've never seen one on a Vespa.
You do need rollers and springs. Start with 5s and go from there. If you can, find out what the Tecnigas comes with as far as rollers. I think the pipe for the Minarelli comes iwth 4.8 or 5s.. Get some springs equivalent to the Malossi Yellow, often called 1500 rpm springs,
It's going to make a big difference on the bottom.
If you have the 16x13 rollers in the original variator, they are the most common out there, and you can get a couple sets of cheap Chinese rollers and springs for the QMB139, which are the same as the ones in the ET2, and figure out what works without shelling out for a bunch of stuff you won't need. Changing out rollers and springs on a 50cc scooter is a fairly standard process no matter what you ride, and pretty much anyone who works on scooters can do it, so if you have someone local who lives under a bridge and works on Chinese scooters for beer money, that person should be able to do the job a lot cheaper than a Tech in a real shop, as long as he has the right tools. Find the guy who works on scooters out of his house and rides the fastest POS out there.
Do you have a 70cc kit on it?

Did the pipe bolt right up and do you have a part number for it? I was thinking about the Doppler, but I really like the way that pipe looks on the ET2.

so pee'd off. On way back from mechanics the bike was proper boggy on pull off and up the hill. He put a 74 jet so this morning, I thought Id put an 84 in and do a bit of trial and error, upping and downing till I got it right. I started it straight away, changed the tax disc over and then it cut out. Now I cant get the bugger to start. any ideas guys?

Check the compression, and make sure you're not getting too much air. If you have an open box, or opened the box, it will do that.

I just tried 2 different Leo Vince chambers on my et2, and both of them bolt on, but they both hit the frame when you go over a bump. So it's the SF3 after all. Sucks.

Do you reckon if I have messed with this and its been turned too far either way, this will cause the "non-starting" problem

It trys to start but doesnt kick in. Although If I leave it to stand for over a day and then start it, it will start and then almost immediatley cut out.

Oh, and does nayone have any idea how to change my fuel cock? Does it just pop out?

If that's your idle mixture screw - then yes, it could make all the difference. Once it fires, does 'wanking' the throttle keep it going?

Hi Jim,

Yes I think it is the idle mixture screw. All it does is the "chugging" noise and sounds like it wants too. Infact, if I leave it for 2 days and then try and start, its actually kicked in for maybe one second and then stops again and unable to start.

Is this the screw that needs to be "righty tighty" all the way in and then turned back one and a half times back out?

Yes - but not too tight when screwing it in! Just seat it gently, then 1.5 turns out and that's a good starting point.

However - with all the chops and changes you've done to the carb, it could be 'anything'.

Can you put it back to square one and do one mod at a time?

I only did the 74 to 84 plug chop. But that was after it stopped. After this night shift and once my little darlings have jumped all over me and woke me up with a strong coffee, Ill get on the screw first. Something tells me, somewhere along the line I have wound it "lefty loosey" as far as it will go.

Anyone have a dunce hat?

I was right the air mixture screw was lefty loosy as far as it could go so wound it back up then loosened it 1.5 turns. Whats the screw next to it?

Anyway it still didn't start so took the carb off, gave it a bit of a clean, put it back on.

IT STARTED!!!

But then revving so fast it seemed like I was going to take off, applied a bit of throttle and it died. And that's it.

stop wanking that throttle
Hi marky,
Been in your situation years ago, this sounds like a classic air leak, check the airbox outlet to the carb inlet, there is a flange within the trumpet that can look sealed but is not, the only way to check this is with the carb in situ, remove the airbox cover, remove the filter and check the seal between the rubber trumpet and the airbox is tight, then check the inlet manifold is tight at both the carb end and the manifold to head, whilst there make sure all vacume hoses are attached and TIGHT.
It is very frustrating chasing a stupid problem, i replaced two malossi mhr kits and three pistons before i found the air leak, and i am a mechanical engineer .
Also it might be worth checking if you have had a soft seize, whip the barrel off and look at the rings at the exhaust port, they will be stuck in and there will be obvious signs of scoreing to the piston.
If this is the case it may not be the end of the world, i usually got away with a new piston and rings .
Cheers
Atb.

Marky, the big screw is the idle screw which raises the carb plunger when screwed in, the smaller screw is the mixture screw and on the 17.5 dellorto should be wound out from a soft stop zero, 1.5 to 2.5 turns, you will know when you reach the sweet spot as the revs will raise by a hundred or so and the throttle will then rev crisp and responsive with immediate pick up. When you find the spot adjust the big screw down to normal revs.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Atb.

Just cant seem to get this bugger to work. I have taken off the air filter, all that looks cool. Tried to start the bike when I first got up, kick start. Running out of bloody battery power. Bike started straight away. High revs again, lasted about 2 minutes. Went to die off, I opened up the throttle, conked out. Cant get to start.

If I had any..which Im kinda glad I haven't. Id pull all my f*cking hair out!
