I've split this into its own topic, as it's nothing to do with rear wheel play...

You really don't want the needle being ground up by the gears, best to dismantle and retrieve it.

Before dismantling you may want to try retrieving it with a telescopic magnetic retrieving tool.

That magnet will only work if the needle is made of ferrous material.

As a plan B. If the magnetic tool does not work drain all of the oil and wrap duct tape around the magnetic tool. With some luck you will be able to fish it towards the top.

I think the odds of getting it with a magnet, I think I'm gonna dis mental the whole thing. Any one with previous experience doing it I'm mechanically inclined but it's always good to know what to expect

I would go to a medical supply place , get a pair of hemostats and a small maglite to get it out. I have a few pair of hemostats, straight and curved, that I keep in my miscellaneous tool bench drawer. There are invaluable at times when nothing else will work. Drain the oil, and if you can see it, you can get it. And with a lot less hassle that tearing it all apart. Try the magnet too, another must tool.

The needle is likely a non-magnetic stainless steel with a plastic hub, so a magnet is useless. Go to a hobby tool source like Micro Mark and get a surgical instrument called an ear polypus, about $12. If you can see it you can grab it. If that fails you gotta open it up. You can't leave that in there.

I like the little magnet idea. Pick up the needle 10 times. It only has to come out once. Heck, for the effort of taking apart the hub, pick up the needle 30 times.

I think taking off the hub and reinstall it can be done long before you can fish the needle out.

plus it give someone a change to inspect all the goings on and do a fluid change.
