Fellow scooterists,

I just purchased a P200e today(another one), it is a 79 with an original p200 engine. Here is what is going on:

1) None of the turn signals works (the hardware is there though)
2) No tail light working,
3) no brake light working
4) No horn working
5) Headlight lits less than a cigarette lighter seen from 40 yards (the light is so dim, it is yellow and you can hardly see it)
6) No neutral light
7) no illumination on the speedometer

This Vespa came with a battery system. The battery was "shot" but I wired everything to a car battery and still no luck on getting any turn signals or anything.

Is the stator weak? is the voltage regulator shot? are there any fuses? I have another perfectly running P200e but is currently n the shop getting the clutch done. I was going to compare the working P200 and perhaps swap parts.

This is what gets my attention, this scooter should have strong turn signals and horn with the battery(regardless if the engine is running or not)

If you could help me to T-shoot with some basic ideas I would appreciate. The engine runs and starts on the first or second kick. Thanks!

UPDATE 24 HOURS LATER

Ok, so I did some T-shooting and I was able to fix some things. First of all, I ended up putting the correct size battery, I tried connecting a car battery but it wasn't making good contact.

1) the Neutral light on the speedometer doesn't have the hardware(switch and two wires) by the shift selector
2) Turn signal on the dash/headset had blown light
3) Rear left cowl has no ground contact to close the circuit. The cowl has the pin with the round head but the chasi has a empty whole
4) Tail light now works
5) Rear brake light works but only with the rear brakes lever
6) speedometer now gets light

So I still need to T shoot the headlight and also the front brake switch. Does this scooter have a front brake lever switch?

Battery should run the tail light, horn, turn signals and neutral light. The headlight is AC. Most likely your wire is grounding out at the headset/ steering bearing area. You could see better with the top of the headset off. Or maybe the PO just unhooked some wires. And yeah, check the fuse by the battery box.

The only fuse that I see is a glass cylinder fuse installed in series right after the battery. The fuse is inside of a white plastic two piece "capsule", this is similar to the fuses that you find on car stereos

The wiring is all connected at the headset ignition key. At least the engine runs or shuts off depending on the ignition key position.

What is your take on the very dim headlight??

Yes, That is your fuse, it should be 8 amp if memory serves. I replaced the plastic capsule for the blade type fuse and had less problems. As far as the headlight goes, check it with a multimeter while the scoots running. Low reading? Start working backwards to the hi/lo switch, then down the wiring.
