me son took his laptop to the shop for a full reboot n a socket repairing when it crashed .....
well its back but he needs to put the windows code in .... thing is the sticker underneath is all rubbed out n ya can only make out a few letters ....
is there anyway of finding out what it is without sending £80 to acer.. hes just lost his job so thats a no no .....
they had to remobe all the acer stuff as they didnt have a disc with it on n neither does he

its running vista if that helps

This is the cheapest option I can think of:
To get a coa license from a scrapped machine with the same version of Vista. You may still have to validate by phone, but that is easy.

This is still going to cost about £15 I'm afraid.

Shame the shop didn't use a key finder before they re-installed vista.

When you go to register it, you get an option to do it online or do it by phone. Choose the phone option and call and just let Microsoft rep know whats happening. They should set you up with a new number to input while on the phone.

Download http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and it will give you a report of the software installed and the key used that are in your Windows registry. We use it to keep track of which of our partner keys are installed on which machine.

I use magic jellybean for finding windows keys. fair warning though -- the windows key on a OEM install probable won't work with whatever install media you can find.
