Yeah Ima geek, I love watching DIY videos. However, this one seemed a bit interesting if you ever changed your tire sizes or if your speedo is off.

I know its car related but still could be useful. In my opinion. Dunno if this would work for us or not.

Or you may just install a universal SpeedoHealer. I did it, and now I can indefinitely reajust it just by setting the right % coef...

I've never seen one of these before...but you've made it work on a 500?! Would be nice to have a GPS-accurate speedo and not have to resort to plastic cling overlays, white tape marks, or complex mathematical transformations at high speed. I may run the text through Googletranslate and see just how intimidating this could be; though I admit to a LOT of trepidation doing any electrical work on the scoot using instructions in another language! Nice find...

Check out the video in my first post. To be honest it cannot be much more different than that.

Remove plastic
Locate signal with meter
Snip wire
Wire mystery box to snipped wires.
Test
Re-install plastic

I have to say I enjoy watching their videos too.

Hi Wildblue, the installation is really quite simple.
By analysing the pictures on my tutorial, you can easily figure out where to place the Speedohealer.
Regarding the wiring it's very easy, there are only 4 connections to make:

1 - you unplug both connectors from the dashboard: the one on the top (smaller connector) has the power wiring. There you'll look for the yellow with red stripe (+12V controlled by key) and the black one, ground. Connect the red from SH to the yellow/RS and the black with black.
2 - On the bottom connector, you'll have to find out only one wire, the light blue (there's also a light blue with a black stripe, so pay attention to not mess them ) . This wire you'll have to cut, and connect the white SH wire to the end of the light blues that goes to under the bike. The green SH wire will be connected to the other end, the one that goes to the connector.

Than you're done with the wiring: after that you just follow the instruction from the manual sheet that comes with the SH and you set it up with the correct %.

VoilĂ !

I might have to do this...having the speedo off always bugged me but I wasn't really jazzed about a non-lighted overlay as a band-aid (not that they weren't cool looking or functional, they just weren't for me). Thanks for setting me hip to this pretty cool box--definitely have to put this on my wish list!

However, I am still annoyed that the dash is in KPH instead of MPH. I know it was a cost cutting option, but seriously.

Ive been thinking about taking the dash apart and replacing the bulbs with brighter leds, and possibly painting on some glow in the dark paint lines.

Wish it was possible to get in to the gauges and swap out the KPH template for an MPH template that looks stock.

I happen to have a spare instrument cluster, I might take it apart and see what I can come up with locally for a replacement disc.

There's a big difference between replacing the lights with LEDs and getting to the face of the speedo dial. You can get to the back fairly easily, and the lights are in removable round plugs. I've made that change myself. (Several times, actually, because bulbs kept burning out. I'd advise against the super cheap ones on eBay. I also left the incandescent bulb in the speedo side for the same reason...) The face, on the other hand, is much tougher. I think it's sealed. It doesn't mean you can't get to it, but I couldn't figure out how to do it easily.

The first time I rode a 400 after using my 500 for so long, I was shocked at how much harder it was to read the speed. On the 500, MPH are in white and KPH in red. On the 400, they're the opposite, and it makes a world of difference...

canonballrt, thanks for bringing this to my attention. It does sound like a relatively straight-forward install, though I'm still leery enough of cutting into the wiring going to the gauge cluster that I probably won't do it myself.

The first time my father-in-law rode my wife's original 250 I was getting irritated with him since he wasn't keeping up with me on my 500 (and I wasn't doing anything close to WOT). We did a 40-mile loop around Camp Pendleton and he was consistently well behind me unless I really slowed down. It wasn't until after we stopped that he indicated that he thought I had been speeding badly and we discovered that he had been reading the KPH scale on the speedometer. The red on the speedometer just does not jump out at all.

That might not be a bad idea. Have Sticky video it so we can post it in the Wiki...

I'm plenty capable of doing it. (Probably a lot better than most, since that was one of my responsibilities the year I was a sound tech touring with a band...) That still doesn't mean I like cutting into a perfectly good wiring harness. If it's already broken, sure, I'll dive right in. If I'm running the risk of screwing something up that was already working, though, I tend to be a lot more cautious...

Well if the instrument panel cannot be opened, maybe brighter lights back lighting the speedo will help. In full day light it is so hard to read the speedo on my 400.

Hmmmmm...... Is the instrument panel, case what ever you call it from the 500 compatible with the 400?

Maybe a complete swap.

I may have to look at an after market digital speedo. If the mystery box can intercept the signal and correct there has to be a digital speedo that does the same thing.

Or

Use my cell phone.

A reminder that the cheapest, quickest way to provide extremely visible speedo markings is to add your own. Labelling tape works very well. The Fuoco speedo below is marked at GPS confirmed speeds of 30,40,50,60 and 70 mph. No need to read digits, and it solves the speedo inaccuracy as well. I've done the same to all my bikes.

well this explains whhy you can't go over 75mph, you don't have enough markers on the speedo face. Add the 80, 90 and 100 and it will fix it. Razz emoticon

I wonder if the SpeedoHealer has enough flexibility to adjust it so you read correct MPH on the large KPH scale.

If you're successful, you should write up a MP3 tutorial for the SpeedoHealer install How-Tos.
