Today, my girlfriend and I returned from our second road trip on my MP3 400 in a month. The winds have been a menace and my GF (passenger) has a very sore neck due to gusty winds jerking it around. Her helmet is not heavy, nor is it light. It fits her perfectly. Her balaclava is only a deterrent from the cold. I have a large GIVI E55 Maxia on the back and that keeps her body stable. However, it doesn't cure the wind issue. My 27" Cee Bailey windscreen helps with the frontal gusts, but not with anything coming from the sides and rear.

She needs some sort of neck brace to keep the jerkiness to a minimum. Any suggestions welcome.

hey Eric,

it's quite expensive (but what price for neck pain?), but the BMW Neck Brace system is the only one I've come across that does what you need. I think your gf will need to be wearing a full face helmet to take full advantage I think.

Maybe worth a look though:

Loads of images of it being used online too..

Cheers, Pete.

There's a couple other options out there. One is a dirt bike neck brace. You can find them at most motorcycle shops, especially ones that specialize in off-road racing. Also, here's a couple of cheap ones on eBay that might do what you want:

Neck roll

Neck guard

You could look into an auto racing neck brace, but I know nothing about them.

Another option is a football neck brace. I'd try Dick's Sporting Goods or somewhere like that. Or, here's another eBay link:

Neck roll

Hope that gives you some ideas.

Thanks Mark and pbw! I researched several supports, including the BMW neck support system and Leatt braces. The BMW product is a bit out of my price range. However, the Leatt braces look good. I wonder if I can combine it with a neck roll because the Leatt brace itself won't work as it's meant for impact. Eric

I wonder if one of those inflatable pillows designed for airplane use, with some sort of tie at the front (velcro even) to keep it around the neck, would do? It would be pretty cost effective to try first off. Maybe she just needs a little support?

Sandy uses one of those that a doctor has you wear with a stiff neck. She loves it on long rides and hihh winds. Wal mart carrys them. Looks like the one on your post. First picture. Cheap too. Edit. I mean cub kings post. The neck roll. Only they are white.

And if you wanted to pretty it up there is always Joanne fabrics, and velour fabric to create a wrap that isnt a glaring white.

Sandy cuts the toe out of a sock and slips it over it. Changes it as needed.

I wouldnt need to cut the toe out of a sock. I just hope that people behind me dont mind the smell of the sock.

I used a Leatt Brace while racing Go Karts and still had head mobility so I do not think this is what you need for Your GF. I would think the neck brace like the doctor gives idea is better then the BMW or Leatt. Other foam collars might be better I seen some very thick ones on go kart sites such as Acceleration Karting in Las Vegas and others. Need to fix this so she continues to ride with you. Good luck in finding your solution.

I have a "Walmart neck brace" that I use during airplane trips. Slip a neck tube like a Buff over it - you can get Buff knock-offs for cheap on ebay - and she can have any pretty color she likes.

I had this problem when I rode the back of my husband's Harley. The windscreen protected him but I took but brunt of crosswinds which left me with a sore neck. I would occasionally use my neck brace but on hot days it was pretty stifling.
