The high tech wrist watches with GPS built in them, what is the GPS for?

http://www.rei.com/product/867476/garmin-tactix-gps-multifunction-watch (here's one example)

Is it used to help you find your way? As in, can you start running in the middle of Manhattan to nowhere and then use the watch to help you get back home?

Or is it solely used for stats, like tracking your speed?

Read this.

It appears to be able to offer some form of navigation info, but from what I can glean, straight line nav, not roadway nav.

They use the GPS to measure how far you walk/run.

It appears to also give bearing and distance to a preloaded destination (waypoint) and stores your track for display on an external device.

It helps them find you when you are lost in bonkers.

The gps is usually to record tracks and performance data (speed, distance, heart rate, elevation, grade etc etc etc etc etc). Essentially they gamify the activity. Sometimes they are helpful in navigation... A watch screen is a bit small to be very helpful here.

From what I can discern, it would be useful in overland navigation, as it has a magnetic compass, can give current location in Long and Lat, and will point in the direction of a waypoint you select, with distance to go info. Of course, it has no way of alerting you to obstacles in the straight line path it gives from your current position to your destination. Thus, if there was a lake between you and your desired destination, for example, you would have to establish waypoints before the fact to bypass the lake.
