It's called Gap insurance, it's pretty cheap, and you can either get it from your carrier or in the F&I office when you buy the bike. It covers the difference between what you owe and what the bike is worth.

Choosing insurance is not Piaggio's responsibility. Manufacturing and distributing scooters that don't burst into flames after 1,000 miles is. Responding to customer care inquiries is. There appears to be a basic lack of courtesy and decency within the Piaggio USA organization. They should be grateful this did not result in a product liability claim. At the very least they should indemnify the OP for the difference between the insurance settlement and the cost of a replacement.

The NHTSA takes Scooter and Motorcycle fires seriously.

"ODI became aware of [the July 26] incident through a posting (with photos) on www.Spyderlovers.com," the agency said.

Might be a good to talk to them.

I think my Vespa is on fire everytime someone starts looking at me incessantly. I am not past the trauma.

The OP needs a good product liability whore lawyer. Once the WL sends a couple of letters to Piaggio, they will probably start talking to him.
