There are a couple of videos on Instagram of a Goldwing and a K1600 with retractable training wheels.

It's beyond hilarious.

The first time I saw those 'outrigger support wheels' on a bike was on an early 650 Burgman.

Technically, they turn the machine into a rather sad four-wheeler, though I suppose installing them would allow people with physical limitations to keep on riding for a few more seasons without having to cough up mega-thousands for a dedicated three-wheeler or trike conversion.

Not everyone has perfect balance, vertigo or blood pressure problems, hypothyroid issues, who is to say that somebody "oughta?"

Not my thing and not many people's thing either or there would be a lot more equipped that way. At least if you had a set you wouldn't need a side stand!

My next scooter might be a 4-wheeler, battery powered with a flag up the back. That way you can park it inside the pub.

There are generally three different issues people are dealing with -- Height, weight, and balance. A smaller bike generally fixes the first two, but not the third. And height is sometimes trickier than people think it is, leading to an unexpected mismatch. And that, in turn, tends to make the weight problem all the worse.

TL;DR: It's complicated.

I totally agree but all I see is training wheels on really big tourers.

If you have balance issues surely you'd reduce the effect with something that carries less weight as it's easier to control.
