I needed to have a 12-v source for my GPS on my MP3 and did not want to go through all of the pain of running more wires. The photos show my method. I have a small rechargeable battery (WKA12-1.3F) and added a standard 12-v outlet from an auto store. I found a small ladies wallet thingy that fit the battery etc. and hang the stuff on to hook eye beneath the handlebars. The GPS is mounted onto the windshield. Works fine.

Welcome to MV.
Interesting approach. But I am not seeing a fuse or circuit breaker installed - very dangerous without circuit protection. A short circuit or overload could result in fire, easily. Get an inline fuse, maybe 2A (check what gps requires) and install. .... |

I am trying to think who makes this same thing already.
We use this sort of thing with my Ham Radio Hobby running on Batteries and Solar Panels. Those 12V 7Ah batteries work very well. Running the wires are not all that difficult, but you do the mods that you are comfortable with doing. The easiest is just to change the left Knee-Pad with a replacement that has the 12V Cig already done, and you connect it via the Alarm Plug... It can't handle light loads for GPS, Charging a Cell Phone. Go to Scooterwest.com and search on this. If I think of the company that does this already, I will come back and post the link. It daisy chains into an existing cable.
http://www.af1racing.com/store/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=6371 Pull the handlebar covers off, look for a plug that would mate to those in the picture, test them for keyed power and tie into them. |
