Well after wanting to buy the Beverly 350 I ended up with a new BMW. Wow is all I can say, it's awesome. After putting 300 miles on it, I got back on my GTS and felt somewhat uncomfortable, I didn't realize how unstable it really is compared to this much larger bike. I have put the Vespa up for sale. I want to thank everyone here for all of the informative data over the last few years. I have learned a great deal from many of you.

Congrats on your purchase. Wish us all luck with all of our "unstable" Vespas. I rode the Beemer, it's alright but certainly not a city scoot.

I have both a Vespa GT and a real motorcycle in the Honda NC700X. The Honda is a little more stable at speed, but it not nearly as fun to ride.

In any situation where riding takes me up to the top speed of the GT, I would much rather ride the scooter.

In riding mine and others as many miles as I have, most of them at 60 mph and above, I can definitely state that they are very stable machines right up to their top speed.

Congrats. I bought a c600 last year. It truly is an awesome machine. I had the same response after riding my BMW. The Vespa does feel very skittish at higher speeds compared to the BMW.

Both have their place though. My c600 is very capable in the city and highway. However, I do think the GTS gives a certain satisfaction that is hard to replicate on a larger bike. Riding to my local farmer's market on a summer morning on the BMW doesn't quite feel the same as when I do it on my GTS. Don't ask me why, it just doesn't. The Vespa just feels more leisurely and less serious (in a good way). But when I really want to ride, the BMW wins hands down.

For me the BMW is more capable all around work horse/commuter for my needs now. The Vespa does have a special place though.

Congrats on the BMW, I went with the F700GS.

I felt it was lighter and handled more like a scoot than their scooter!

Got throw the leg over tho... can real PITA with the cases on.

The level of tech on these bikes is kinda amazing... TPM, ABS, traction, I can adjust rear shock on the fly, gas millage... feels like I am piloting, not riding sometimes!

I think you hit the nail on the head. It's not a matter of being unstable, it a feeling you get riding a lighter bike with a steeper steering angle (less trail). They feel twitchy (you picked the perfect word) because they steer so much quicker. My daily ride is a raked chopper that requires you plan your turn 1/4 mile ahead (exaggerating just a little). It made my stock Harley feel twitchy. And jumping on the Vespa is a real carnival ride for the first mile or so until I readjust to the steering.

Congrats! I love both my BV250 and C650 GT for different reasons. Prior to purchase, I was cautioned that once I get the BMW I'd forget about the BV. Definitely not; I love riding the BV around town and trips under an hour and the BMW for when I need more comfort over longer distances.

I had written the post below about missing the ease of a smaller bike when I bought the BMW. I now have my Stella and it confirmed my beliefs. I am lucky enough to be able to have both. A BMW is not a better bike than a GTS - it is a different bike. If your ride takes you regularly on high speed, long distances that's one consideration. If you need the ease of maneuvering through traffic and tight spaces - that's another.

------------------

"O.K. so I bought the BMW C600. It's my favorite scooter of all times. But it's a very serious machine. I missed the playfulness (for a lack of a better term) of my Vespa. I'd always liked the Stella and it's classic design - but -I never enjoyed the hand-operated shift. I have great respect for those who make riding shifty Vespas and Stellas look easy. To me it has always been a contest between the bike and me with the advantage to the bike. When I first found out about the CVT version on Modern Vespa I contacted Genuine. They would not commit to importing them. On the chance they would one day arrive I ordered one. I just visited my dealer, ScooterSmith, in Houston and Steve told me he had just placed a 2014 order and my bike should be in December or January. Candy Apple Red. It's not even showing up on Genuine's website. I will now own extremes - the ultra high tech, massive, BMW - and the low tech, "playful" Stella. Gotta take my meds now."

Maxi Scoot versus Mini-Scoot
Hey, I love them all. I ride with a 250cc plus Scooter
Group called Minn-Max of Minnesota. The group is
dominated by 400 and 650 Burgmans, the New BMW
and the classic Honda Silverwing. Many of the rides
are out of the City - although we tend to enjoy off
Freeway back roads. The larger engine scoots are
super for this faster longer distance riding - they have
great wind protection. I ride a 2007 Suzuki Burgman 400AN.

Having said that, I just bought a Vespa 300 Super. Why,
because the ride feel of the Vespa (or smaller frame machine)
is a hoot. I like my Burgman, but I love my Vespa! The
Vespa around town is an emotional exhilaration. When I
buzz buy on the Vespa, dogs jump with joy, kids waive and
everyone smiles. Not the same on the Burgman. Everyday
is a "Roman Holiday" on the Vespa.

My input - "You meet the nicest people on a ........"

Didn't mean to offend anyone. I have had a blast with the Vespa and it has treated me well for more than 3 years. I agree it's a great option for the City, I just wanted something that I could feel a little more comfortable getting further away from home on. The BMW fits the bill. I may very well pick up another Vespa or the BV 350 in the future but for now am enjoying the new ride. I have nothing but good things to say about the Vespa, actually had very few issues with it in almost 13000 miles. It's been a great ride, just seems underpowered for what I need going forward, plan on doing more highway and interstate riding as I'm bored with where I've been riding over the last few years. You guys all rock, I will still be online. Also, will post some pics of the new ride shortly.

Lawdog and Craig,

I agree. Even my little '93 Sporty feels planted compared to a scooter. I've had that bike since then and it just sits in the garage weeping now.

I prefer the Vespas.

Just FYI, but you are on a slippery slope that eventually leads to a Goldwing. Aww yissss, the Goldwing, where every city becomes a port-o-call.

This can lead to needing a scooter for your bike, completing the circle of life. (people still use geocities...that's amazing too).

Its actually called quartz blue. I have to admit, I only saw the color on the web so I was taking a chance when I ordered it. It actually is even better than I thought, very happy with the color. I can't seem to keep my backside off of the seat, it's addicting at this point. I'm sure that will wear off at some point.

You definitely have the 2 for 1 part right. I can't see owning a BV350 and a C600/650 though. Either of them is a good highway bike, neither particularly shines in town IMO. Seems to me something like the new Primavera or Sprint still has a place in most rider's stable - presuming you can own two bikes for different purposes (and if you can't - the 300 GTS is a pretty darned good compromise )

I bit the bullet myself
Ok, I'm crazy and bought a used BMW 650 GT. Brought it home about two months ago. Really intended to trade one of my Piaggios in, but on D-day I couldn't part with either one, so now I own three.

It is a 2013 red model and had about 500 miles (titled for 15 months prior to my purchase). I love the bike - absolutely carves the road and so much faster/quicker than either of my other bikes.

Had a little early trouble - the computer controlling the dash went out on me - which I discovered when I ran out of fuel, yet the gauge still read 1/4 tank. Dealer gave me no problem and replaced the part under warranty in about 2 weeks.

Things I love:

1. Speedo agrees to GPS measured speed
2. Auto-cancel turn signals that seem to work pretty well
3. Handling is outstanding for a bike a good bit larger than anything I've ever ridden.
4. Adjustability of windscreen - electric, just roll it up or down (but see below)
5. Air pressure sensors for tires
6. Oil level sensor (but see below)
7. Aftermarket accessories - already at least 4 different wind screens available, plus Corbin has fashioned a saddle.
8. Fast. Really fast!
9. Accessory adaptor in place under a panel on handlebars - easy-peasy to wire a GPS.
10. 3/36k warranty

Things that need work:

1. Windscreen allows too much air on the top third of helmet, even at highest adjustment setting
2. Oil dipstick and fill are behind a panel (though see above re: oil sensor)
3. No remote or button to open the seat
4. Mirrors - I have yet to find an adjustment that shows less than 2/3 of my arm. I can adjust to see behind just ok, but then can't see sides. If adjust to see the sides, no rear vision at all.
5. Shock load adjustment - hard to adjust (especially without the BMW tool, which was not present when I bought the (used) bike).
6. Seat - do ANY scooter seats come in comfort level for large man such as myself?
7. Height - many complain about high seat, but the problem (for me anyway) is not height, but width/girth of the bike.

All in all, the pluses for me (especially 3 and 8 ) well outweigh the negatives.

I think the bike that I need to get rid of is the MP3, but no way I can part with that baby today.

And to my fellow BV350er, I can assure you the BV350 and BMW GT are far different machines. The BV and MP3 are much closer comparisons, but the BMW is in a different (bigger and more powerful) class altogether.

I can't see owning a BV350 and a C600/650 though
I used to own both at the same time. They really are completely different animals. The BMW feels like a motorcycle. The BV feels like a scooter.

I'm an honest 5'11", with relatively short legs. I tend to sit on a cushion of some sort, raising me up another 1/2-1", depending on Airhawk or gel pad.

I don't have any problem managing the bike, just find it a wide stance with both feet down.

Best,

...spend a couple days on a Harley-Davidson Road King and that Beemer will seem as twitchy as a tricycle.

The way I see it is: you can fly the English Channel in a 757 or a DC3 or an open biplane or something like that first guy, Bleriot. Every time you go lighter and more basic, you increase a certain kind of fun

Congrats Art! Great maxi-scoot. Such different rides. That would be like comparing my Hyundai to my Vette. At 250km/h the Vette feels so stable it almost feels slow. I don't think I would attempt that in the Hyundai Elantra

19" Rims with 285/40 is a major different ride. So it must be on the BMW with more weight; stance and wheel radius I would imagine.

- Peace out.

I have both a Vespa GT and a real motorcycle in the Honda NC700X. The Honda is a little more stable at speed, but it not nearly as fun to ride.

In any situation where riding takes me up to the top speed of the GT, I would much rather ride the scooter.
I ride a Buddy 150 and the CTX700. I prefer the Buddy for a lot of things, it's just not a highway/light touring machine like the Honda is.

Love both. Prefer scoots though, just my style!
