The water seal has broke during my trip to the Ace Cafe a few weeks ago, and i did think of just replacing the seal, but I've been told you need special tools to complete the job, and according to the old Haynes manual, it's a fidddly job, so I've bought a new crankcase, complete with the seal.

The thing is, there are a few nuts surrounding the crankcase ( I think 9) and two of them are right up underneath the side panel. Has anyone attempted this removal of the crankcase cover? What method did they use?

If you're talking about replacing the water pump as a complete unit, then I have done it. I seem to remember that it was slow, although relatively straightforward. I don't remember access being a problem apart from having to remove the exhaust. You might have to disconnect the shocks and lift the rear end slightly to get the rear to swing down. If you do this, disconnect the spark plug ht lead.
