Ugh...
Well, I've run into a bit of a roadblock. I brought my old netbook to use while on the road, but it seems that it has acquired 36 viruses... Neither Firefox or IE will not let me connect to the interwebs so I can download any antivirus stuff. I don't have the technical knowhow to do anything to fix this.
I will be up in LA tomorrow and for the weekend. If anyone in the area is willing to help me get this thing cleaned up I would be forever grateful and in your debt. My only other option right now, is to buy a new laptop (preferably a chromebook due to limited space and weight issues) to use while on the road. However, this was never part of my plan, and I don't have enough extra money to spend on one. What I can do is offer Vespa related art for sale (see picture below.) 5"x7" metal prints for $40 shipped within the US. (I could probably do international, but it would be a bit more because of shipping and I would need to contact my printer to check on what that might be.) I can take payments via PayPal. If you are interested, please PM me. Liana ![]() |

Most netbooks have a restore function that will reinstall the original factory OS. Usually it is accessed by holding down a key while the computer boots. Which key varies by brand and sometimes by model. It is a PIA because when you use it you have to run all the updates and reinstall any programs you have added but it will get rid of viruses. If it is running Windows and you didn't have Office preinstalled you can sign up for a 365 trial that will get you through the cannonball and back to Hawaii. If you just want to blog and surf the web get Windows Live Writer which connects to almost every blogging platform out there and is free along with Windows Live Photo Gallery which should see you though your cannonball needs. Personally, unless you have previous experience with a Chromebook I wouldn't get one for any real work while you are on the cannoball. A straight tablet would be a better option IMHO so you don't have to learn to use a new limited function OS.

Looking forward to meeting you in Stewart or Hyder, or somewhere along the way. A bunch of us are flying into Prince George on the 31st, and meeting our support truck there. They'll be pulling a 16' white trailer probably up the same roads you'll be on. I'm with Mark Anderson's (Maroy) group. We wimmin have to stick together!! And thank our menfolk for helping us out!! I also owe a big thanks to Glasseye for putting me on the Cannonball path! See you soon!! |

While I love my Chromebook, as Cheryl said, it has a VERY limited field of use. It's great for surfing the net. You can do a little bit of document editing, but it's all tied to Google Drive. Photo and video editing is even more limited.
You can install a version of Ubuntu Linux on it. I'm using Crouton. You'd have to look for instructions on how to install it... The things I like best about it are: 1) Super virus resistant, since it's Google's own custom offshoot of Linux. If it doesn't run natively in Chrome, it doesn't run on the Chromebook. 2) Easy to use 3) Great battery life 4) It has a built-in, pretty nice keyboard. (As opposed to most tablets, which can have them as an add-on, but they'll have to be bought and later charged separately) 5) Removable storage. (At least, my Samsung Chromebook has both an SD card slot and a USB 3.0 port for an external portable Hard Drive) 6) HDMI out for watching videos on TV. Downsides: 1) If it doesn't run natively in Chrome, it doesn't run on the Chromebook. (Yes, that's the same as #1 in benefits. To me, it's both...) 2) Very limited document viewing/editing. Both of those can be mitigated by also using Ubuntu, but it's not as intuitive as the default interface... 3) Limited internal space. (Can be augmented, see point 5 above. Also, some models - but not mine - can have their hard drive replaced with a bigger one...) 4) Very limited processing power. (Though no worse, and some models better, than tablets) Hope that helps! Lianna do a separate thread and see if someone can help you. I didn't see the post and people don't always look at the CB stuff. Good luck and if we can do anything holler.

A friend had the same problem once & couldn't even get online so I had to use another computer (any public library would work) in order to fix his. You'll need a USB drive... On a library/borrowed computer, go to http://us.norton.com/downloads-trial-norton-360?inid=us_hho_topnav_download_detail_360 and download the free trial onto the USB drive. Once downloaded, open/install the program on your bad computer & run a full scan when it's ready. I'm 99% certain that will fix your virus issues. FYI - DO NOT plug the USB drive into your bad computer until you have the Symantec Norton virus program loaded onto the USB drive. Hope this helps. I'm more than willing to send you a USB drive with the program on it already but it would take a couple days to reach you I think. I'm in Vegas. Please PM me if I can help. --- LC

LC353- Got your message, I was able to download from the link and thankfully I had enough sense to bring a thumb drive when I left home. Will try it out later when we get to LA.
Thanks everyone for the input. If the antivirus doesn't work, then I guess I'm out of luck and will have to find a replacement. |
