That's what i was told this morning when I had a set of City Grips fitted. So...how long are they "new"? Anyone know? 100 miles? 500?

Slippery
I think 50 to 75 miles is enough to wear off the mold release.

All new tires are a bit slippery when new. There is a bit of release compound left on them from the molding process. Only takes a few miles to wear it off. Of course the edges take a little longer since we don't spend much time on that part of the tire.

And if you use any of the tire "wet" treatments please be sure not to get it on any surface that contacts the road

Slippery when new hey?
My first thought was babies, but since you actually mean tyres........ You'll be fine. Honest. If you had brand new tyres with stickers on the track and deliberately run over painted lines in drizzle at 100mph, well then serves you right. But on the road, especially if it's dry, the issues are not anywhere near as bad as people make them out to be. In drizzly wet stuff, new tyres are a tiny bit slipperier, but really it's not worth stressing over. Enjoy the ride! 8) PS: new babies really are slippery little suckers........ |

I had an encounter with a wet street, years of oil and suntan oil on a road, a few miles after i changed out my front tire. There's something to the new tire and wet road thing. Not a good feeling to hit the brakes and still keep going. That said i've never had a problem on dry roads. Am cautious whenever i get a new tire on tho.

Fittend with those City Grip for almost 7000 km by now on my GTS 300, and still find them slippery, especially during rain or on new road surfaces.

Unless you are braking very hard or cornering very fast, I don't think you have to be concerned about riding with new tires. I have never had an issue with them, and I ride harder and faster than anyone I regularly ride with.
I have put on at least four new front tires and seven or eight new rear tires and never changed my riding style. |

I had quite an exciting encounter with new tires on my bicycle some years ago. A new pair of Michelin Pro 2 Race tires were installed, which were one step down in grip from the Pro 3 Race silicon rubber tires I been running in the summer. I did notice that the Pro 2 tires had a shiny coating. There was one last chance to test them outdoors as my wife was leaving for work in Switzerland that noon, so I would be the only caregiver for our then tiny boy.
There had been a rainstorm for the first time in weeks, but the road was quite *nearly* dry. I miss-read the side label and overinflated them. I was in cleats. Although I was being cautious and slowed greatly, I felt confident enough to take the first ever turn with the inside pedal down. I went down really hard (no memory) and I woke up to a motorist wondering if I was alive. My helmet's styrofoam liner collapsed to one third its normal thickness and was broken into 7 pieces. Though there were no broken bones it took months to recover from that fall. At that point I think I had safely ridden around 50,000 miles, largely at good speed, but that did not protect me from a perfect storm of mistakes and conditions. Ugh. I think that if any one of the mentioned conditions were removed it would not have happened. |

Motorcycle tyres do NOT have release agent on them - they are smooth when new because the moulds are smooth. Yes, you'll get better grip when they're roughed up a little (takes a few miles) and when they're warmed up (takes the same few miles). By the time a new tyre is warmed up, it's about as grippy as it'll ever get.
Always let your tyres warm up before 'testing' them to their full extent, this applies to every ride, not just when tyres are new. |
