I've got a 64 small frame I rode years ago and then pulled apart. The parts were never moved but putting them together again I've got far too much slack in the gear stack (as if I need new shims). In assembling the three speed gear stack I'm referring to this page

http://scooterhelp.com/tips/engine/shift.cross.sf.vespa.html

I don't have a feeler gauge but know it isn't right because the gap I've got is wider than the width of the circlip holding the assembly together. This should be straight forward with 1) a circlip on either end 2) a pair of matching shims 3) the three speed gear cluster... There's nothing else to the assembly and I'm wondering if i've got the gears in the wrong way. They have raised surfaces on one side to allow for proper alignment with the shift cross but I lost track of which direction they were facing before. All of my parts seem to be in place which makes me think I've got a gear facing the wrong direction...

Look for the wear markings on the shaft and match them to the gears.
And read this thread; http://vespasmallframeforum.proboards.com/thread/10843/gearbox-rebuild

I just put pics of a full V90 stack with shims on your small frame forum thread.

First and third (or fourth if you have a 4-speed) should have a flat/flush side. This flush side should be the "mating surface" for the shim and circlip. Then it's just a matter of making sure 2nd gear is aligned properly.
