Dear Members,

After years of riding an mp3 400 (bike) I invested in a 2009 gilera gp800 with 4,000 miles in a private sale. It is a scary beast compared to my tame and reliable mp3 which I am keeping.

The bike looks clean but has little in the way of service history. I have ridden 200 miles in two days and found it cut out a few times at low speeds and was struggling to start at one point today.

Looking at jimc posts his gp800 bike suffered similiar symptoms and needed a remap. Can someone recommend a mechanic in central london or essex area who can give bike a damn good service. With the stalling symptoms I want to ensure I use someone who understands bike so I can fix everything first time.

Thank you all in advance

I'd sell it to someone who is ignorant of their reputation as soon as possible.

They are a money pot and a nightmare to own and maintain.

sell sell sell.

They are, however, a treat to ride.

Any competent dealer should be able to get the re-map done - ask at Scootech first. I got mine done at CBS Whitton - they don't sell or service GP800s but they can do the re-map just fine.

When I'm back in the UK (ETA mid-June all going well) I might have loads of spares going cheap, as I'll be rationalising my scooter herd.

I am still a novice to something so heavy but my mp3 feels like a toy by comparison. My mp3 has always been trouble free so hopefully I will not suffer too badly.

I dont mind the running costs but break downs have zero appeal.

It was a lot of bike for the cash.

It has the larger screen but finding more wind blast than I was expecting.

Actually the GP800 and the MP3 400 are within a couple of pounds of the same weight. The big difference is the power to weight ratio which is what makes the GP800 so much quicker.

I don't want to rain on your parade but there's a reason it's cheap and that because no one else would want it.

Their electrics are terrible and they over heat warping the block in the process.

As for breaking down we all know a previous owner of one who I won't name but there's a reason she now rides a Honda.

Yes agreed the weight is similar but the gp feels like a much more planted bike.

I was tempted by the hondas but I liked the look of gp. If it proves to be unreliable I will sell it. Considering the money I have lost on cars over the years bike ownership has always been kind to me so far.

I don't like the wind blast even with bigger screen this is definitely raining on my parade!

Jim I went to scootech today and had the gp800 remapped and serviced. £260 lighter and two miles up road bike stalled again.

There was a post elsewhere about a leak from the intake manifold. My concern is filtering in london traffic on a 240kg beast that loses drive

Bugger. Mine still stalled occasionally (or faltered at least) until fully warmed up.

Not to do with engine temp because has done it when fully warmed up. They spent three and a half hours servicing it so not as if it has not had a good old check over.

On a brighter note it goes like stink.

GP800 going in for manifold gasket tweaks which apparently will cure the cutting out. It is a known problem which is annoying.

Dealer asking Gilera for a contribution but not holding my breath.

Nice to meet you at Scootech this morning C, hope that the stalling problem gets sorted out. Your GP800 looked in excellent condition.

Did you get the TMAX as a loaner - it would be interesting to hear your opinion on that.
