Hey guys. Just a quick question for you - Does the tilt lock stay engaged after you flip the kill switch to off and remove the key from the ignition?

Thanks.

Yes.

See this thread for different methods of using the center stand versus the Tilt Lock.
Dumb question

Or, pull up YouTube Videos of the MP3

Yes, and it'll stay locked even if you remove the battery, as it's mechanically locked (even if electrically powered).

This question comes up at least once a month, if not more. See this example from about 2-weeks ago.https://modernvespa.com/forum/topic127273?highlight=tilt+lock

I am not trying to be a jerk (although I am probably failing), but it gets old pretty quick seeing the same questions come up all the time. Please use the search function for these kinds of routine questions in the future. I found the link above using he search terms "tilt lock" and it was within the first 10 results. If the search doesn't answer the question, folks are generally very happy to answer.

I noticed on my MP3 400 that when stopped and I unlock the tilt with the handlebar switch, the scooter jumps a bit of tilt to the right. Is that common?..a problem?

If you engaged the tilt lock while braking and rolling to a stop while braking the front suspension is compressed a bit and will lock that way. When you hit the unlock button it will pop up a bit. The road is probably slanted a bit to the right so you get pushed that way. Normal.

This can also happen if you lock it while it is tilted a bit. Again normal.

Yeah, I know I am a dick. I figure if I have seen this question at least once a month (and 3 similar threads on tilt lock in less than the last 2-weeks) since getting on the forum back in Aug 2012 and it seems tiresome to me, it must really suck being on here as long as you and some of the other guys have seeing the same questions about the "tilt lock", "seat comfort", "rear tire", "lowering the bike", and "Dr. Pulley sliders".

I personally have no issues with helping to answer a question but every once in a while it helps to remind everyone that the site has a very capable search function that can answer many of these repetitive quesitons.

The other thing about this thread that struck a chord with me is that I would have just thought that the OP could have just straddled his bike, turned on the tilt-lock, turned off the key, hit the kill switch and seen what happened. This would have probably answered the original question. A better question would have been, "After killing the bike and taking out the key with the tilt-lock on, I found out the bike will stand up on its own. Can someone tell me how long will the tilt-lock hold the bike up before it falls over?" All of this becomes moot if the OP doesn't yet own an MP3 and is just asking it as a hypothetical question.

OK, now that I got that off my chest I am standing by for some bad karma points...

I'm with you to some extent. We keep getting questions like "What size is so-and-so bolt?".

Such a poster must be assuming:

1) That somewhere there's a list of every bolt, with its full description.

or

2) That someone will go and take that same bolt off their own bike, measure it and maybe take a picture, and post back.

If 1) then the poster must realise that if such a list existed, it'd be very prominently made available for viewing, as it's be so useful to everyone. As this isn't the case, we have to assume the poster means 2) - in which case WTF doesn't he take of the bolt himself to measure it!!! Expecting others to run around in this fashion is the height of thoughtless arrogance, and it gets my goat. Wipe your own arse dude!

However, *this* thread is entirely different I'm glad to say.

More so in General discussion but even still here. Usually original questions are offshoots of other questions that went before so not completely original, but yes there are many repeats. I don't mind though. If I know an answer off the top of my head I will usually give it and if I don't have a lot of time I will suggest trying a search on certain terms. If I have a few moments I may even look myself.

All of the moderators have a different take on this but if a topic is in progress and someone asks the same or very similar question within a certain amount of time (for me it is usually a couple weeks after the original question has dropped off) I will generally lock their topic, gently, an put a link to the current topic.

My view is that we should encourage participation in MV and make people feel welcome as long as they are sincere or not spouting FUD.

I forgot the other topic du jour that seems to be the most popular one at the moment:

"I am a newbie looking to buy an MP3-xxx. Besides looking for the "notch", what other things do I need to look at/what price should I pay/how many miles is alright when looking at either NOS or used MP3's?"

I am allowed to poke a little fun at folks on this issue since I was there 2.5-years ago.

And obviously, no matter that I am poking fun at all of this, I still check into this forum many times each day. The folks on here are great, as a general rule, and I learn something new at least once a week.

Cummingsjc,

After reading your posts on this thread, I thought..."Yep, good points." I didn't want to come off as a dick either, but I also wondered, "Wouldn't an owner of a MP3 just go out and check that function on his own ride before asking a group?" I'm willing to help answer questions, but people need to develop information mining skills for themselves sometimes.

I would understand a question like that better if someone was looking to learn all about this make of scooter prior to actually seeing one in person, but if you own one already -- isn't that a basic information fact you should have known about prior to buying the machine? I was all over this forum and YouTube for as much information about the MP3 as I could get before I laid out thousands of dollars to get one. Am I unique in this? I really don't think so. I bet nearly all of us did some research on it at least.

I got on the forum quite a bit after buying the bike but Scooterwest answered a number of my questions on the bike when I test road both a 500 and a 250 prior to buying a pair of bikes from Vespa of Sherman Oaks (they gave me a great deal on the set). The salesman educated me immediately when I said something about not having to put your feet down at a stop. When they got delivered, the technician was kind enough to give me a quick class that clued me in pretty well and I played around with them to figure things out. Thankfully, I have not learned much "the hard way" but I know my wife's first bike got dropped from a standing position because she didn't truly understand the tilt-lock resulting in a nasty bruise, replaced left side mirror, replaced left side reflector, and some scraped paint. I agree with you that if the question was information gathering, it makes sense. If the OP already has the bike, it does not.

I would say that we don't always know the skill level of the asker when it comes to internet research or research in general. Someone that happens on this site, sees the volume of knowledge here and the sharing that goes on may feel at ease asking a question. That is what MV is about at least to me.

Also, while the search function works ok if you know what to search for or even that it exists there are some that don't. MV in part was intended to be welcoming as opposed to some forums where people are alienated because they asked a redundant question. Anyone remember scootbbs? We were all new once. Hell I was very close to getting banned in my first year until I got it.

+1. Thanks for pointing that out WEB-Tech since you are absolutely right. I have done this a good number of times in the past. I believe that my first exposure to MV.com was via a search for information on the MP3 and I browsed a number of topics in guest mode before actually joining MV.com at the insistence of 14Perry. I agree with Sticky that almost any MP3-related search will bring up some MV.com/MP3 discussion threads.
