Nice post. This is what I've always believed, that we are mostly talking commodity product here. I just ensure that the octane level meet Vespa's requirements.

I'm staying away from gasoline with 5-10% ethanol.

That's fine if you can but it's not always possible.

In those cases proper maintenance and inspection is your friend.

So the real question is, use 89 octane non-ethanol or 93 octane ethanol containing Shell V-Power.
Use the ethanol free whenever it meets the bike's octane requirements.

Depending upon your location the gasoline you buy from a branded location may be gasoline refined by that branded supplier or gasoline refined by another branded supplier and it is "exchanged" product. What distinguishes one brand from another is what the trademark owner chooses to call the product. There may be specific additives to the gasoline or not. In the industry Chevron had a respected additive package. Gasoline is pretty much a fungible product. Just buy from a respectable location at a competitive price. I was in that business for many years.

While I have no way of knowing what they do for labeling in your area around here they post it on the pump and usually on the large sign that can be read from the road along with the price just like they do the ethanol gas.

A side note on ethanol price. I have noticed at the only station that has non ethanol in my area that the price remains at a fixed $3.99/USgal regardless of price fluctuations with the E-10 grades. So far at least. I did ask at the station but of course they haven't any idea.
