Really?

I sometimes think England gone into hiding. On balance, I preferred it when you both said sorry when someone trod on your foot.

It's turning into a sort of lowest common denominator rule following idiocracy. People don't know how to live here, they just bang on about their entitlements without understanding the responsibilities.

I don't know if it was always that way over there, but it has definitely changed pretty recently (last fifteen years or so) over here. It's very, very, very wearing living in London now because of it.

If it isn't a drinking holiday, it probably isn't celebrated in the U.S. St. Patricks day and Cinco de Mayo are only celebrated because they ARE drinking holidays.

I'm Mexican-American and I still don't understand why 'Merica celebrates Cinco de Mayo if Mexicans don't even Celebrate it at home.

As for St. Georges day I got no opinion on that either way.

Do I say Congrats?!? or just Happy St. Georges Day?

My father was a US Naval officer stationed in London 1971-74, my high school years. When we lived there, we discovered a nation of polite people with the same moral values. And that is why we are anglophiles. Be proud and grateful to be English. I know it will get better.

No longer Saint George's Day in England, but happy happy anyway. As a Hawkins, I am quite, quite proud of my English heritage, despite the embarrassing fact I've never been there. It most certainly is on my -- gawd forbid! -- "bucket list" (yes, I'm old enough to have one!).

This truly is a great and supportive community worldwide. And I'm proud to be a small part of it.

I don't think this can be said today. I am not at liberty to describe my current employment but it makes me extremely gloomy about the future of shared moral values. But you're right, I think its a state of mind.

Anyway, a patriot loves their country, a nationalist hates everyone elses. That will do me. I don't mind the St George stuff but often regard it as a sign of insecurity - basically when we were surer of ourselves, nobody bothered wrapping themselves in flags. Nationalism is (imo) a small minded thing which leads to conflict.
