I thought of doing that with mine in the UK - but then i'd have lost out on the effective maximum height by the height of the lift at rest. A good 6-8" - which I'd sorely miss.

Yes. That would be my concern too. He installed a lift that had a 40" lift height to make up for it. Most lifts only lift about 30"-33".

do these lifts have to be bolted to the ground?
No. They have wheels so you can move them around. Takes some effort though.

One guy I know cut a hole in his concrete floor the size of the lift and installed it flush with the floor.

Now that's not a bad idea!

A deck around it was another solution I saw. Many homes especially those in the SW have tensioned cables in the concrete slab making cutting a hole a disaster.

Yeah, the post tensioned slabs are a pain to do anything like this with. You definitely DON'T want to be cutting a hole in them. I have two houses in the same neighborhood. Both were built in 2000 but by different builders. One has a regular slab the other has a post tensioned slab.

A few times a year Harbor Freight will run a sale on theirs for $299. I bought one recently.

Thanks for the info. I'll wait to see if that sale price comes back before I buy, since I'm not in any hurry to buy.
