DaveLX, that 600 has just affected you for a little while.

Sometimes I ride the 150 for a couple of days, then start preferring it for the next few.
And sometimes I almost randomly choose the GTV, and start preferring it instead.

Like having a couple of kids. I would never expect of one scoot that it should be more like the other. Instead, sharpchick and I give these babies equal love.

I've just been offered a brand new Honda CB500F for £450 deposit and £80 a month by a Honda main dealer. Hmm.....
I was riding a Triumph Speed Four for about a year but it was a little too temperamental for me when I had to ride it in stop and go traffic. I preferred my GTS 250 the majority of the time but still wanted a motorcycle. So I sold the Triumph and bought a CB500F. I kept my GTS for city driving but I find that I like the CB500F for freeway riding and long rides in the mountains just a little bit more at this point. I filter and lane split with more confidence on the Honda and it isn't bothered by irregular pavement as the GTS can be. If you like wind protection at high speeds you might consider the CBR500R which has a full faring, but is otherwise the same bike. Either way you can't go wrong. Take a ride on the Honda, it's a great bike for my needs and I find myself spending a lot more time on it that my Vespa since I've had it. There are trade offs with both types of bikes and each has its strengths. Won't hurt to have a test ride.

Believe me, I have no plans on selling the Vespa, as it's my work horse and remains a trusted mode of transportation for me. I sold my car and rely on the GTS to haul groceries, to commute in the city, and I enjoy cruising with my girl. It doesn't have to be an either or proposition.

Thanks for the info!

I was thinking a CB500F with Givi screen. Honda don't do their own for it, which is a bit bizarre. Just to keep the wind away from my chest a bit. I don't do long distance, mainly commuting.

I test-rode the bike this morning. It seemed like an ideal thing to do during post-op recovery....!

Nice bike. If I was going to buy a bike, I think this would be the one. not too heavy, lowish seat height and capable of 115 mph. fast enough. With a top box probably the perfect all round bike Nerd emoticon

I looked at all of the Honda line and ended up with the NC700X, mostly because of the upright riding position and the trunk. It holds almost the same stuff as the pet carrier in my GT, something you will never find on another motorcycle without a top box.

I added a windscreen for riding comfort and it has turned out to be a wonderful touring bike.

It also gets better fuel mileage than a Vespa GT.

It is less of a "street bike" than anything in the CB range, and may not appeal to you, but it is a nice bike that fit my needs very well.

Here it is alongside my brother's touring bike, the new R1200RT.

I like the NC700X, but the deal on the CB500F was a good one. £4995 retail and I'm offered a brand new white one for £4495, with Givi rack fitted for my E370 top box. Apparently, the CB engine is more "revvy" and more like a traditional motorcycle engine too, compared to the NC, which is based on half a Honda Jazz engine.

The weakness of the NC is the engine. While it provides decent performance and very good fuel economy, it is rough and noisy. I have finally gotten used to it and accepted the bike even with these. The new 750 engine is supposed to have gotten better in this regard.

The 500 engine has similar power and economy with smoother and higher revving performance.

A friend brought his Street Triple on a ride recently. Now that engine was fantastic. It sounded and revved like a race prepared engine.

Dave,
What I have learned, as so many have said, motorcycles and scooters are different machines that are suited to different tasks. I have ridden the wife's Fly 190 just after getting on my Duc and don't want to ride the scooter any more...but then I get on my GTS and all is right with the world. In my opinion, the GTS is the most useful tool and I ride it 70% versus 30% for the Duc. In fairness, I did put shocks and brakes on the GTS to make it more responsive. If I could only keep one, it would be the GTS. Don't tell the Duc.

For me, the big change usually comes after I go tearing down the street, around the bend, up and over the hill, and head towards the stop sign as the main road approaches. Just as I do on my motorcycles, when getting within about forty yards of the stop, I pull in on the clutch, so as to coast at speed. Only thing is, the "clutch" lever on the scooter is the rear brake lever, the engagement of which nearly sends me flying over the handlebars. My wife calls this my "fly and die" maneuver. I call it a "self-correcting mistake."
Yup. . Been there, continue to do that.

Dave, congratulations on the new bike. Its not what you ride, but that you ride. There are plenty of roads for all to travel.

I rarely ride my scooter any longer. My time is limited and I prefer the bigger beemer. But, I cannot emotionally part with my Vespa. And, its great for getting to Padre games and parking for free or quick trips for coffee or breakfast.

I am quite certain that you are going to like it. Those are light and should be easy to throw around. And much quicker than any scooter around.

You might enjoy the shifting and foot brake too. It took a little getting comfortable for me but I like the difference now. Not better, just a different experience.

Very nice. I looked up the specs and it sounds like a terrific mid-size bike. My first Honda was a 1985 VF500F. Mid-size bikes are a lot of fun. Light weight, great handling, and gobs of power.

Enjoy, Dave!

My first Honda was a burnt-orange 1972 SL350. It only had 400 miles on it when I purchased it from the man who lived across the street from my house; he had purchased it new for his daughter to use in her commute to college. I guess she either didn't like it, or flunked out. I bought it in 1977, as soon as I could legally move up to an over-125cc engine. That bike weighed about as much as a dump truck but I thought it was pretty cool as the time!

Interesting - I looked at the Honda Powesports website and noticed in the US, it's black only, with ABS optional.

In the UK, it's now red, white or black, with ABS as standard.

I might be wrong, but I think someone on here said something about ABS becoming mandatory for bikes over 125cc in the UK in 2016? Perhaps that's why it's already been made standard spec?

Once I got used to shifting again (I'd had a Honda CG125 in the 90's), I remembered how much I love having that control. I'm looking forward to it. Home delivery next Saturday. Yay!

The CB500F (R and X) is aimed at A2 class license holders (max power 35kW = 47 hp). I think you'll just love it. Lots of power, nimble and reliable. It's a Honda! They are made in Thailand.

Yes - I have an A licence (unrestricted), but just don't really need the power of the gorgeous new CB650F. (Yet)

Give it three years....

Whilst everyone raves about the CB500F, there's one downside - it needs a first service at 600 miles for a valve clearance adjustment, at a cost of £250 (depending on dealer).

However, subsequent services are one a year/every 8000 miles, whichever is sooner. Second valve clearance service is at 16,000 miles.

£400 discount off retail, hugger and Givi rack fitted and free home delivery mate.

Essentially adds up to a £650/13% discount of a £4995 bike. I'm more than happy with that.

Is that from chiswick? What's that place like? Big showroom?
Chiswick Honda is my closest Honda dealer. So no, it's not from them!

It's from Doble's Honda in Coulsdon. I purchased my Vision 110 from them last year too. They're a cracking dealership, great staff, both sales and service. I think they're also MCN Dealer of the Year.

Chiswick Honda is okay I suppose, but I've found them better for service than sales. For example, Doble's reply e-mails the same day normally. I emailed Chiswick on Wednesday - still no reply.

Honestly, I can highly recommend Doble's. If you need a contact there - PM me.

To actually answer the question -

It's okay, reasonable parking.
Coffee shop in the show room, popular with bikers.

Big showroom.

Infinity are upstairs - clothing/helmets/accessories.

I'm sure they're okay, they just don't have that "family owned business" feeling that Doble's have. They're more of a corporate Honda outlet, I suppose.

Those bolts are chrome, not green! It's a reflection of my gazebo overhead.
