Can anyone tell me what the consequences would be of not doing the last step on here....the bottom picture.

I don't remember doing it when I rebuilt a few years ago and was wondering if it could be contributing to the difficulty I'm having when downshifting, particularly 3rd to 2nd. I'm thinking that it could be stretched cables but this has been playing on my mind a little.

yes it can make false neutral n stuff.... you can shim it without too many pieces of extra work but

You should do it.. and get any shim you need to get your gap between. .1 and .2

if you don't check it, and your gap is too big you'll have bad shifting conditions and you won't like it.

Thanks guys. I'm not getting any false neutrals, just temperamental downshifting. I'll start with the cables before going in there. Thanks again.

Just posted this in another thread, but make sure to check for play on the clutch lever. I had a problem shifting from 3rd to 2nd. It turned out that the lever wasn't stiff enough and I wasn't getting the right torque to move the selector. In other words, the lever would give before the shift would happen. It felt like the gear selector was stuck, but only when downshifting between 3rd and 2nd.
