So it seems that the odometer on my Vespa PX125 doesn't work since I got it. Could it be a cable issue, and if so where do I check it? And if it's not a cable issue, what are my options of fixing/replacing it?

The speedo works fine though? If it doesnt as well, then replace the plastic worm gear.

Otherwise...

The odometer is a bezel entry job. Ive done a few smith speedos over and it ends up being more hassle than a replacement for a speedo you can actually buy cheap enough. Theyre around, ive got a spare, If you were in nz id give you one to replace yours.

Im fairly sure these are the same as brit speedos, in that, the needle spring is under tension. the second you remove the needle off the pin, that tension is lost and needs to be found to go back together to read speed properly. not impossible but not exactly just sticking it back on either.

Then theres the actual cause of the problem, which may only be a tiny spring of the ratchet mechanisim itself.

speedo cable and worm
itll be the cable or the worm drive in the hub .... i bet anything the bottom 3inch of cable has snapped ..... buy both n get em fitted ... its not that hard

i have a fresh coffee n 20 mins spare so here goes ..... [slow typer]

undo headset top n push the cable up through the fork leg while lifting top away .... itll make it easier to get at the clip that atatches cable to speedo ...
undo said clip and lift away top ... you can leave it attatched to the loom but id unclip that n put the headset safe ...
now down at the hub ... undo the little bolt holding that plate that squishes the cable into the hub n the cable shoud be able to be pulled out so you can see the end ..... is it snapped ... bet it is ....
then take the snapped off end [if its not snapped pull the inner only out from the top] ..... you may wanna pop something under your stand so the front wheel us off the ground ...... then spin the wheel backwards the worm n the other parts should pop up ... .and use the square bottom end to fish the bits out .....
youll have the plate then a rubber doughnut n a metal 'ring'... put em safe .....

now you have removed the cable inner n the worm

cable first .... grease the new inner n slide it UP the old cable thats still running through the forks .... then keeping the new inner inplace in the forks pull the outer out ... now slide the new outer down the inner n youll be able to wiggle that bugger through the hole in the fork leg with ease ... pull the right amount out grease n slide the inner down .... cable fitted

now for the worm ... grease the little plastic bugger n pop it in right way up [round hole to the top]then spin ya wheel the right way n itll pop in with a bit of a fingering ....
then clean n regrease the metal ring/tube n pop that in with the flange to the top...
thenslide the top cover up the cable followed by the rubber doughnut clean it n stick a bit of grease in the hole so it slides up .... ya might wanna put a bit of grease in it to help ...
now the shitty bits acometh ... feed the cable inner into the hub into the worm making sure it goes right in bu checking the other end of the cable it all level inside [the part that connects to the speedo ]
if good then slide doughnut down into hub ... itll stick out a little allowing the plate to squish it up n hold the lot inplace ...
slide the plate down n put the bolt back ...
i usually put a saw cut in the top of the bolt making it a screw ... its easier to get it home with a last nip from a spanner ...
now if its all working you can spin tyre forwards n the cable inner will rotate in the outter up top ... if not its not in the worm correctly so sorry try again ....
when it spins put headset top back n ride .... should take about a hour ... but if youve never done it before and ya following this put a day aside Razz emoticon

ive written this out a few times n cant find any of em ... it needs shoving somewhere safe
