Ok, so I 'plugged' and it now 'plays' but probably a bit too much! On my Vespa GTS 125 I insert the key and it does not disarm the alarm, just the key fob does that. Is this right?

If the alarm is anything like the one for a 300, then the fob is the arm/disarm. Inserting your key in the ignition and turning it on will cause the alarm to go off. This is by design.

My OEM alarm for my GTV has a fob and a small "key" that fits into a port attached to my left knee pad. The "key" will arm/disarm the alarm if you lose the fob or the battery in the fob happens to die.

That sounds right. If the key got into the wrong hands, the scoot would still be alarmed. Of course, many folk keep their alarm fob and car/bike key on the same key-ring, which is a bit daft security-wise although more convenient.
