Recently replaced the belts. Removed the variator and the clutch. Replaced the variator and the clutch using an impact wrench. Did not use torque wrench. Now when the clutch just starts to engage I hear a high pitched squeak that I did not hear before. It only lasts for a second or two. Is it possible I overtorqued the clutch or the variator? The transmission is working fine except for this squeak when the clutch engages.

(which includes just about everyone on this forum ![]() Unfortunately, it looks like I'm your "expert" of the moment, more's the pity. This happened several years ago: My ET4 exhibited the same symptom, a little squeak when starting off, just after I had done a belt/roller change. Everything else was fine, so I just let it go, not wanting to re-do everything just for a little pipsqueak. Months later, same belt, I developed a rattle that was only solved with the purchase of a new clutch package. The base plate had become loose. I wondered if the squeak and the rattle damage were related so I re-installed the belt and carefully tightened everything down. The squeak went away and everything worked fine from then on. I've replaced belts and rollers before and since and the only time I developed any problem was the only time I had the squeak. I don't know if using an impact driver caused your problem...I used a torque wrench. I'm guessing that maybe I didn't have the belt seated properly, close enough to work but not as close as it should have been. OK, That's all I got. Pretty slim pickin's advice-wise, I know. But there you have it. I'd dive in and reset the belt making sure it's seated properly. If the problem doesn't go away, you've at least removed one variable and it won't cost much except maybe a new variator nut and some Loctite. And some time. And a beer while you're at it. |
