Several days ago I started getting a message that "No posts exist for this topic" when I clicked on the arrow. I can get on page 89, but there is no page 90. Is it full? Has it started again under another name? Are you still holding New Orleans against us? It wasn't personal.

I've been getting it for a while now as well. Seems to come up as they get closer to 100 and when they are getting close to rolling over to the next number. I'm sure there's a computer term for it tho. They haven't gone anywhere.

I get the same; I don't know the reason but think 'The Forum' prepares a new page before the end of the current one.
I knew computers would take over in the end. |

Yes, I get that repeatedly. It happens when a page is nearly at the 40 posts mark, but 'hidden' posts make the number pass 40, tripping a counter to a non-existent new page.
I brought it up with Jess during the last Donk iteration - and we think it's all down to something that Ashbrook does when trying to post from his mobile phone. Jess did some manual housekeeping in the background and that thread resumed normal service. Ash has no clue what it is he does that causes the phantom posts, and Jess hasn't spotted yet what causes the counter to trip but no post to actually exist. The trick is to click on the '89' rather than the '90' or the 'last unread post', and scroll to the bottom. This is worth doing even if there's a couple of posts on a new page (say '90') as you may have missed some at the bottom of '89' as they don't count as 'unread'. A quirk of the Donks. ![]() |

It's the one thread that kept me coming back to MV almost on a daily basis and I hope it continues

Thanks Jim, I don't understand it, but at least I am not doing something stupid, at least regarding this.

I'm still getting this error on the Donk thread (as a regular ), but I don't think Ash has posted any pics recently to it. Are you saying Jim that the error is a legacy from Ash posting pics to any page in the thread, or from posting pics to the page before the error? I can understand the former, but not sure the latter stands up? (and blaming Ash seems a heavy burden for him to shoulder on his own, big shoulders though he has )

Could it be that deleted or "hidden" posts consume post numbers in the thread, thereby putting the 40 posts per page counter off?

I've seen this before and I think i can explain it.
There are two separate processes going on. The page counter and the number of posts on a page. The page counter uses a calculation to tell how many pages there should be based on the number of posts. The number series is separately counting from the actual number of posts/pages. If things were perfect and there were 100 posts with each page having 10 posts, then you would see page 1 - 10. Add one more post and you would see 1 - 11 pages. Should work well, but what happens is a post gets deleted and there are really only 100 posts over 10 pages. However the counter is still showing 1 - 11. You click on page 11's hyperlink and it doesn't have anything to return because all of the posts are rendered to 1 - 10. In order to correct this, there would need to be a function that would recalculate the number of actual posts (or live/visible posts) and then segment them into the number of pages. |

Deleting a post does change the counters (posts and pages) appropriately, it's not that as far as we could tell.

I'm scared to post now!
I only post pictures from my phone and am still not sure whether it is my Hotmail or Googlemail account that is causing the issues. Posted from my desktop btw! |

More likely to be the Hotmail that's causing the problems rather than the Gmail - which is pretty standards compliant as opposed to the Hotmail "We'll set our own standards" idiocy.
Don't worry about it Ash, I can't see it's your personal fault! Do you ever find messages have to be resent, or they say they've been sent but they don't appear? |

Is this when you need to upload pictures? Otherwise I can't see the point of using email just to post text.

Yes I only use it for uploading (emailing with the thread token) geotagged pics while traveling. Usually for an MV map.

Well, I've had this problem and am glad to see somebody brought it up.
I've read this whole thread and not understood much. So, I'll say this: Boy, I'm glad we got that all straightened out. Moving on. |

Anyway, in another nine pages we'll be starting a new topic, so we'll see how that goes. It'd be good if those who email pictures in from their phones could keep some sort of tally when things don't work when they should. Reporting in this topic could prove useful if Jess ever has the time to get to the bottom of it. |
