Last time I was on 2 wheels (motorized kind), I waved to all motorcyclists and they waved back. Now I notice it's inconsistent.

My experience so far:

- Waved at a Ruckus rider but he only nodded. He looked too nervous to take a hand of the bar.
- Sport bike rider waved first and I waved back.
- Waved at a big cruiser rider. He didn't wave back.
- 50/50 on other scooterists. I waved at all. Half waved back.
- I ignored the e-bikers.

Did I do okay?

I think you did just fine.

I wave to everyone, but it's just a "lift my hand off the left grip for a long few seconds"

It's actually reminiscent of how my late mother would wave to folks she knew while driving, just lifting one's hand from the steering wheel.

(in very rural areas, people wave to folks they know while driving, or at least did back in the day)

Too many to wave at in London, unless it's a girl on a bike.

Wave to who you want to wave to. =) You won't always get a wave/nod back though. My husband and I don't always get waved back when we're on our motorcycle, so it's not always ride-related as to why someone doesn't respond.

(Once I'm able to venture out on my scooter more, I'll probably just nod as I'm not comfy taking my hand off the left bar yet.)

Ah the wave question. I like to wave, so I wave. It sounds like you like to wave, so wave. I think you did just fine. Scooting (to me) is all about you. As long as you ride safe, then enjoy yourself. Clown emoticon

I always wave, but only a high 5, even on the Harley. High 5 wave back by others is cool, although bikers tend to give the low point but it is thier choice, I'm just happy to be on two wheels....

Actually, scooters usually get a "power to the people" salute. I find that scooter riders wave back less often than most other rider, go figure.

I do the wave to MC'S and most people wave back. Scooter people don't as much, altho i get some really funny waves from the ones who do. I don't routinely wave to them. 1 in 40 wave back. There's a woman in a mobility scooter who always waves at me when i ride by her. A regular high, back and forth wave. She's a trip. Her scooter is tricked out. I think she'd be riding a regular scooter, or has. if she could.

I give the low wave to all folks on two wheels. I find that the people most likely to return the wave a folks on big cruiser bikes. I have also had great conversations with folks on big bikes while stopped at intersections and while filling my tank.

I find that most scooter riders wave, as do most of the old-timer "real" Harley guys. The sunny weekend guys playing dress-up rarely wave. BMW/Ducati guys sometimes. Crotch rocket riders never do.

I used to wave to everyone. Most waved back. Now I will go a while without waving until someone waves at me. I always wave back, then usually wave to the next guy I see riding.

I wave at every Vespa, especially another GT. And usually wave at any other scooter, but many are not really enjoying their ride and scowl. I am quite sure that most of those have lost their licenses and were forced to find a 50cc scooter to get around. They are mad about it too.

I do the low hand wave at everyone. I found that when my 12 year old is with me, more riders will wave back. I have a feeling he is back there waving like a mad fool and the other riders don't want to disappoint a kid.

I quit doing the low wave,

just off the handlebar bout 4-5 inches, 2-3 fingers

some respond some don't, not matter either way to me.

never on real twisty sections or heavily bike traveled areas like the Dragon, my hand would never be back on the bars.

I try and wave at every PTW I pass. I say 2/3rd return the wave. I do find scooterists to be the least likely to initiate or return a wave in my little corner of the world. HD riders are far and away the most likely to return a wave and sports bike riders are mostly like to initiate a wave.

Snow,
Welcome to the hood. I ride my scoot to work any chance the weather is not raining (or snowing). It's kinda like the "Corvette Wave", not everybody does it so you'll just have to accept that. I have found the the "head-nod" gets just as much attention.

Usually I nod my head as opposed to waving. I only do it for Modern Vespas, especially LX150's like mine. It's hit or miss, but usually they respond (if they didn't start things themselves). If they don't, I don't take it personally and sometimes they do it too late for me to do something before convergence.

I don't wave at all. I don't see the point, especially on the roads full of potholes. I can honk using my airhorns or nod sometimes. Keep your hands on handlebars , better to stay alive than to be blamed as "impolite anti waver".

I've noticed that when I ride my scoots, about 25% of motorcyclists and about 75% of other scooterists wave. But this week I did an experiment while commuting on my Honda CTX700. About 90% of motorcyclists waved and no scooterists waved at me while riding the Honda. I waved at 17 scooters while commuting this week. Thesis anyone?

I also drive a Jeep and there's a whole point system to the Jeep Wave. I have fun with it but it drives my Husband insane.

On the scoot I'm more likely to nod...unless it's the rare occasion I see someone on a scoot who actually rides it for fun and not as a DWIcruiser...then it's a beep and an excited Kermit the Frog wave since I'm so excited to see someone who gets it.

I wave to everyone - although I almost never get a wave back from the small chinese scooter riding crowd, as well as some motorcycles. Motorcyclists wave to me more on country roads when they realize I'm moving at highway(ish) speeds.

Since I'm in a pretty small town, Vespas get a special wave - a "V for Victory" hand signal - I figure I can get that started amongst vespa riders.

It's fun to have a vehicle that inspires a connection like this. When I had a BMW Z3 Coupe, other coupe drivers would wave madly if across the lane, and actually roll down the window and give a verbal greeting and compliment at a stoplight.

10 to 15 years ago when 2 wheel riding started coming back into vogue I would wave and get a wave all the time.

The City I live in is great for 2 wheelers... You can ride pretty much all year long and they have started adding parking spaces for bikes only in several areas where parking is limited.

Now there are so many PTW's in the city, it gets annoying to wave... kinda like the tail of the dragon.
I will wave or toot if gives me a signal but I won't initiate.

When I had L-plates, I'd nod at other riders. Most non-L plate riders never waved or nodded back. A fair few learners with L-plates nodded back.

When I rode on my big bike yesterday (no L plates!), I guess I forgot myself - I nodded at several L-plate riders, I either was totally ignored or just got a stare or funny look back.

I guess there's learner solidarity in the UK and the rest of us just don't give a shit?

Shame really - we're all on the roads together. Let's feel some solidarity, rider brothers!

I was accelerating from stop sign up shifting when a Harley guy actually waved (something those guys never do, except to there own) but could do nothing..by probably thinks I snubbed him...

Oh the problems that come with riding on the proper side of the road..
