Broke ankle, clean break all the way through the tibia right at the ankle joint. Have to wait until I can see another doctor Monday or tues, to see if it is going to have to be pinned. Was at a toll booth paying toll had the tilt lock locked gassed it and was too close to curb, hit it and lost control. Scooter landed on ankle hard. Rode 30 more miles and went ahead and ate lunch at medicine park by wildlife center at Lawton Oklahoma. I don't have all the feeling in both legs due to a car hitting me over 30 years ago. Looked down and ankle was swelled up real big,

So sorry to read this, always bad to have an off.Seeems so much worse when a silly low speed accident.
I guess if there is any upside it's the clean break. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope the box in the corner doesn't get too boring!! |

I am not one to watch to much tv. Sandy was sick and did not go with us. She notice when we left I did not have on my boots, I was wearing tennis shoe. I told her they were muddy and I did not want to take the time to clean them. She started in on me while I was going out the door. Damn I hated to make that phone call to her. I'll never hear the end of it. I have already been told there is no way I will ride again without good motorcycle boots, not that cheap crap I buy. I don't know that it would have helped, but you could not pay me to tell her that, She is convinced that had I listened to her. ect. ect.

Oh George.
So sorry to read of your event! Don't worry on the bike, it'll get fixed. I'm sorry you're hurting and the healing will take a bit. Be glad that Sandy wasn't with you and possibly hurt too and that you handled it all well. Feel better, friend! Steve H/B |

Thanks for the kind thoughts badger. I will be off the scooter 6 to 8 weeks if it heals well. At 70 the doctor said healing takes longer. The Doctor said do not put any weight on it until told different.

Look at the boots that Fuzzy bought, they are pretty good for being $116 ... I bought a pair was surprised at how much support they give around the ankles. I'm with Sandy on this one .... hope you heal soon. |

I am going to side with Sandy on this one though George. any over the ankle boot is always better than tennis shoes. Good motorcycle boots that firmly enclose and support the ankle are best and probably would have prevented a serious injury like what happened. |

So sorry to hear this. Hope you heal quickly! Reading the comments sure makes me think. I ride to work with shirt/tie, and dress shoes on. I may need to reconsider my footwear and consider the boots. Also live on NH border, so the helmet usually comes off over that line. I may revisit that too, but that is a WHOLE other topic. lol

George, my prayers are with you for a speedy and good recovery. I know Sandy will be sure that you follow ALL the medical advice.
Here is hoping for a return to riding. Plastic is replaceable rather easily and isn't really all that expensive. Take care of yourself and keep us up to date on how you're doing. |

George - do I need to make a road trip up to your place to help you?
I got crutches I had to use in the past you may borrow. Do as the Doctor instructs you ... no bearing weight on your right foot ... just do it. Remember age increases the amount of time it takes to heal. Just like me. All I wanna do is go and ride. But I know my strength isn't capable of holding up my 500, yet. Besides, Funky is over at Vespa Dallas getting some MODs done to it. But I can drive up there in my truck and if need be, pull my trailer there and bring your scoot back to Vespa Dallas ... if that can help? Just advise me in what I can help you with. |

Thanks Funky, Stopped on the way home at walgreens to get crutches. They are open all night. Not going to worry about the scooter for a while. Cannot ride anyway. Sandy loves to ride, more than me. She is going to miss that. We will be back. I said the wrong bone, it was the Fibula, The small bone that runs beside the long big one. (For those like me that don't know the difference.) Sandy said I misunderstood the Doctor, it takes a younger person 6 to 8 weeks, older ones (like me ) can take up to 12 weeks.
Ponydrv you have met Sandy, She just want to be helpful. I prefer to do things on my own or figure them out. On to other things now. Don't want to drive people crazy with my whining. |

Sorry to hear about accident and ankle, but I can understand how it happened.
I have found that when filtering, if there is an island or I am near the kerb, I have "brushed" the kerb with one of the front wheels. I have on occasion got a wobble due to this. Also, we have speed ramps here in Ireland and usually there is about 6" or so between them and kerb, which is enough to fit on a 2 wheeler, but the extra track of the front wheels does have to be taken into account.....it takes a bit of riding time to get used to all these peculiarities. So just a caution for any new 3 wheel riders. |

Bubba you have no idea how right you are about taking my medicine, Sandy is no nag, She has never raised her voice at me in 23 years of marriage. She is the sweetest person I have ever met, and not that phony crud either. But good grief is she firm when she makes up her mind. I suppose one could call it a form of nagging, have to ask someone smarter than me about that stuff.

Unfortunately (or, actually, fortunately) the marriage didn't last. But that is another story, not really for MV, but things are all good now. Total time with no weight at all on my left foot: 12 weeks. I also had to clean and dress the wounds from the fracture blistering every day. Not fun - but I did everything I was supposed to do and had no complications. Since my foot was crushed, and the heel bone shattered, there is still residual swelling and pain in various degrees constantly. There's no help for that really, it is what it is, so I just ignore it and carry on. |

Good luck in healing. I broke my leg in 2009 and still occasionally feel pain. I had two breaks in each my tib/fib and was in a cast for over 4 months, 5 weeks in a full leg cast.
If you have the option of going with surgery do it. I would have had a much faster recovery but I had no insurance and couldn't afford surgery. |

Hi George...Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I firmly believe both you and the scoot can be fixed good as new...or almost given the miles on both
I had an very low speed accident similiar to your a year and a half or so back. Broke both to the bones in the right leg and now have a rod in there. The worst part for me was missing the Fall Gathering in North Georgia. OaD and I...and others are on the 2014 Scooter Canonball Run that overnights in Norman, OK, Tuesday, June 10th. It would be nice to see you and the Misses again. Get well soonest Mike |

Oh no George!
I just read this today! I hope everything heals up and you can get back on the scoot soon! I broke my ankle last February. Not scoot related, more "I cannot walk down stairs properly" related. Took me a good 8 weeks before I even tried to ride the scoot. So glad you are okay. Sandy is a real sweetheart and I am sure she will take great care of you, whether you like it or not! HAHA! |

Went to the specialist yesterday, The Doctor said because it was a clean break and the location right at the joint of the ankle and fibula, he would not have to pin it or even wear a cast. He put me in a walking boot and said I would probably have to wear it for 5 or 6 weeks. I have to go back in two weeks so he can xray it and go from there. I can also put full weight on it as soon as I can stand the pain it would cause as it is a non weight bearing bone, Only if I am wearing the boot and do not twist the bone out of place. Sounds like good news to me.
Lm15 I will put it down on the calendar, Look forward to seeing you and OAD again. Thanks to everyone for their kind words. Hollyby If we can make it to the fall gathering I hope you can make it to, would be nice to see you again. George |

Sorry to read about the mishap. It is so hard to not just let the scoot fall and pick up the thing after ! With balance off, and 500 Lb. tipping, we try to stop it. Best of luck, heal quick.
