so I had two cats, now have one. My oldest cat who we had for almost 18 years had a neurologic event tonight. Took him to the emergency pet hospital but not much they could do. We didn't want him to suffer and he has been deteriorating for the last few weeks, but still sad. They become a part of your family and life. This cat thought he was a dog and was always with us usually laying on one of us, usually me. He will be missed. I certainly hope the weather is good tomorrow, need a ride on my Vespa. Thanks for letting me unload. There is no need to respond I just needed to let this out. Thanks.

Larry,
I share your pain. I am truly sorry about your loss. Last night I had to make that decision to put down my 11 year old cat Sprout. Over the weekend we plan to tell our daughters. Below is his picture that I took at the vet. Be safe riding tomorrow. I did not ride today as I was not focus. ![]() |

Larry and Tex so sorry for your loss. It's so hard because they become part of the family. Lille kids. I'm on the same fence with my nemo bunny. Won't be long now. It's the long goodbye. Been since Dec since he was supposed to be put down. He keeps hanging in there. Lost some weight but still loves his ice water, pain meds and eats so I wait.we"ll see them again at the rainbow bridge.

As I sit here with my two (abused) rescue dawglies, and having had to have a 16-year-old kitty put down a number of years ago, tears are welling up. I cannot begin to imagine (again...or don't want to imagine) the pain you both feel. But it is part of the guardian/pet contract. Dammit! My heart is with both of you.

thanks for all of your thoughts. Tex sorry for your loss. Yes 18 years is a long run for a cat, but when you have had them that long it is a bit hard to be without them. I am concerned about my other cat who has never been alone, he is only about 5. He is usually one who hides most of the time but tonight he is hanging around me more than usual. We actually bought him after our dog died. Our dog and the older cat were buds, they always hung out together. We did not want the older cat to be lonely so we got another cat. I guess putting human emotions on animals may be stupid, but that is what we thought. And yes lets all be safe on our rides as the weather seems to be getting better.

Larry & Tex...putting human emotions onto animals is, well, human. I'd rather spend an evening with my dogs than many, many of the humans I know. But Larry, you're right...the longer they are with us, the harder it is to let go. But let go we must...but you did right by 'em, and that's what counts.

So sorry.
I had a short haired black cat, called Milo. Who died at 12. He had Diabetes and I gave him insulin shots twice a day. The end came when his kidneys failed and he was in a lot of pain. Hard for me to make the inevitable decision. I have his cremated remains, and this summer plan to take a boat ride off Santa Cruz and place them upon the ocean... Maniac |

Wow we all have stories and yes letting go of your pet is hard, but when they are suffering it is the right thing to do, but the bond you have with them is so strong. Both of my girls grew up with our cat and I think it is harder for them as most of their lives he was there. There is a void. But we go on and we have lots of great memories. Each animal, as each of us, has their own personality that gives them that ability to impact our lives. Whoever invented this pet thing was very smart, they enrich our lives. But when I wake up tomorrow AM and he is not there to greet me............

I have always had animals and losing them is always difficult. I had a beautiful cat that lived until I had her put down at the age of 21. I don't mind saying that I sat in the car and blubbed outside the vets. I would say that if you are having an animal put down, be there, hold them and take them away for burial. It helps.
I have two dogs at the moment. I have told them they must both live forever. |

So sorry to hear of your loss Larry. It's been a while since I've had to deal with this. My wife and I are empty nesters w/o grandchildren and our 3 doggies are quite literally our children. The oldest Cheetohh is 16 and his brother Lucky ran away in 07 & never came back. I mostly grew up with Cats until I got married. I'll never forget Leon, an Orange Tabby who lived 11 years, quite long for a Tom. My mom would shut him in a room when company came. he would always get out. Later we discovered he had learned to paw open the floor vents & crawl through the heating ducts to the next room then pop out like a Jack in the Box. When Mom would buy him off brand catfood he would scrape it out of the bowl & all over the floor. Just like in his litter box, Implying that it was shit. Those are the things you'll remember and can never be taken away.

Sorry for the losses. Pets are always unique and have a special place. As much as I've enjoyed the various cats and dogs I've had (well, the cats had me....), I remember losing them the most vividly. Its bittersweet.
Just spoke with my mother last night....she had two farm cats (at 83 she's still on the family farm alone with (now) one cat and a dozen chickens). I'd become friends with both of them, but she told me one's gone missing for too long. Hard to know what happened, but feel sad for it, regardless. Edit: Never mind mom's cat....was visiting today, opened a shed door and she popped out. Must have followed a renter inside two days ago and got locked in. Lucky I opened the door or we might have found a skeleton. She sure was friendly all afternoon. ⚠️ Last edited by fledermaus on UTC; edited 1 time

Sorry, so very sorry. Cats have always filled our hearts with joy. They're on the bed as I read and type this. I know how you feel and it's awful. Yet we continue to rescue those delightful spirits that bring us more joy and laughter than we sometimes might deserve given their plight these days. You served him well, he has crossed the rainbow bridge. You are a good man for sharing your care. This tear is for you.

Sorry for your loss. Not sure if this is offensive to anyone. I hope not. I don't know why, but this makes me feel a bit better..
To Love Again Oh what unhappy twist of fate Has brought you homeless to my gate, The gate where once another stood To beg for shelter warmth and food? For from that day I ceased to be The master of my destiny, While she, with purr and velvet paw Became within my house the law. She scratched the furniture and shed And claimed the middle of my bed, She ruled in arrogance and pride And broke my heart the day she died. So if you really think, oh cat I'd willingly relive all that, Because you come forlorn and thin Well don't just stand there - come on in! ___________________________________ |

Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. My daughter dumped her college cat on me 12 years ago. I never thought of myself as a "cat person" but grew to love and appreciate Miss Eloise. She died of chronic renal failure abut a year ago and I still miss the sound of her purring on the pillow. On her urn it is engraved, "Those we have held in our arms for a little while, we hold in our hearts forever."

Sorry to hear of your loss. Our animals are truly more than 'just pets' they become family members.
I've had some that even 20 or 30 years after their leaving me I still have fond memories of my time with them. I cat sit for a friend now, 1-2 weeks every month or so, 'McGee' has become such the 'fur buddy' that I miss him even when he's just 5 miles down the road. |

With love to all who lost a pet
RainbowBridge Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... |

Sorry about your loss. Pets are so wonderful and become a big part of our lives, unfortunately they don't have the life expectancy that we have and leave a hole in our lives when they part. I hope tomorrow brings you nice weather so you can take a much needed ride to reflect.

again thanks for all of your helping vibes. AS I am 60 years old this is not the first pet I have had to part with. It does not get easier and we still have fond memories of all of them. All of them did have full long lives and I like to think that they not only enriched mine but I enriched theirs. Is it bad to spoil your pet? I don't think so. The love you get from a pet is so unconditional. And yes I did have a nice ride today. Happy Mothers day to all.
