This morning didn't go well! My Vespa LX50 failed it's MOT due to a leaking exhaust, nail it rear tyre and a few advisories.

I'm a little bit torn, they've quoted me £200 to get it all fixed, which I really can't afford.

How much realistically could I get if I sold it spares of repairs? Or even scrap it.

Any advise appreciated!

Well the tyre is straightforward - are there any secondhand exhausts on eBay you could pick up cheap?

if the nail puncture is straightforward, then getting the tyre patched will be cheaper than getting a new one. and depending on the size and location of the leak, the exhaust can be welded.

Looking at it at the MOT report, I think it's just the overall condition of it. It is REALLY badly corroded. I think if I poked it hard enough with a screw driver I'd go through it!

Also problems with my rear brake cable getting stuck and leaving the brake light on. Few other minor things.

I've been quoted £2600 for a new PX125 if I trade in my LX. Do you think it's worth it? Is that more than I'd get if I sold it privately?

Worse case scenario you pay the money and fix it, you've at least got a road worthy scooter that's worth more than the £200 it cost to fix.

Fix it.
Ride it.
Enjoy it.

Or don't.

It is not what it is worth, but what it costs to replace the bike.

Surely if it was looked after it wouldn't be the state it is in now.

Unfortunately, I have only owned the bike since 2012 and the previous owners were not as kind. It's in the garage every night and covered when parked out and about. I clean in regularly too.

Because of it's age, I don't want to fork out money that I really don't have - if it's only going to be the start of a long line of problems.

Nobody has commented on the PX deal I was offered, is £500 off a new PX a fair partex price?

That's unfair - it's in Hastings, so even if cuddled up in a garage every night it'd rust away to nothing in a few years. UK sea air isn't kind to bikes...

It all depends on you really

How would you pay for the px?

My exhaust is pretty bad rust wise, doesn't leak yet so I'm just waiting for it to fail before I spend any money

The joys of finance! I'm working a hell load of hours over the summer (two part time jobs) and my outgoings are pretty minimal. With my local vespa dealer offering 0% for a year I should be able to pay it off pretty quickly.

Sounds like you want the P. Go for it. Your only going to be putting money into the rust bucket and not get anything for it . Except maybe passing your MOT. There's a time to quit and i think the time has come. Your call and good luck in whatever you do.

What is it worth if it can't legally be ridden or licensed? Not much, I'd guess.

If the scooter in good working order with a fresh MOT is worth £700, and requires £200 of repairs to get it through then you might think that you'd be able to sell it for £500, but people don't want to buy a scooter that needs work unless it's *really* cheap.

You'd probably only get a couple of hundred for an MOT Failed 50 so you're costing yourself quite a bit by not getting the work done.

Of course if you are happy with only getting a couple of hundred for it then let me know......

If it were me I would do the fixes regardless of what you want to do with the bike, what's the actual issue with the brake cable? Is it shot or can it be adjusted? Get the tyre sorted too, clean it up and sell it for more than the dealers offering, people look for bikes in the summer so shouldn't be too hard to sell.
