OK, my answer is unusual, but I would want to play the same song back to back.....

Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison
Pretty Woman (with the instrumental intro) by Van Halen

Normally I would have defaulted to Johnny B Goode or Beatles (I Saw Her Standing There), Clapton or Hendrix, but somehow back to back Pretty Woman encapsulates Rock from the 1950's roots to the hard rockin times of the 70's and beyond.

But I do have a soft spot for ZZ Top, especially Nationwide.

Rock and Roll
In my mind, It has to be Little Richard:

"Long Tall Sally
she's built sweet.
She's got everything that Uncle John needs.
Oh baby.
Yeah baby.
Gonna have me some fun.
Gonna have me some fun tonight."

As far as I can see, there is VERY little to nit-pick in this thread. Every mention has VAST merit. But I'll jump in here with two suggestions that are QUITE out of left field. Some folks consider the Jackie Brenston single "Rocket 88" from 1951 the first true rock-n-roll single. It's a smokin' track -- credited to Brenston, but he was merely a voice for Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm. Secondly, since I was a li'l kid, I have thought Les Paul & Mary Ford's "How High the Moon" from roughly 1954 had all the earmarks of a rock single. The guitar playing is blistering, the multi-tracked vocals are magnificent, and it just makes me feel good. Look, I can go with y'all up through Jack White, Eagles of Death Metal, Alabama Shakes...but certain singles affect us certain ways. When I ride, I usually have Montrose's "Bad Motor Scooter" going through my head! Go figger!

Playing around with YouTube and have to add Frank Zappa/Mothers from Roxy and Elsewhere -- Village of the Sun/Echidna's Arf of You/Don't You Ever Wash That Thing. Mr. Fowler's trombone solo is nothing short of amazing, and the late George Duke's Fender/Rhodes work got me through my junior year of college. (Beware -- there ARE overdubs!!!)

And Dweezil is doing a FANTASTIC job of keeping his dad's music alive!!! Check his YouTube stuff out.

From the British invasion on, it became known more as Rock imho. The term "Rock n Roll" harkens back to the 50's bands like Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry.

So... based on that, I'm gonna go with;

Nothing new, more regressive rock IMO. After Savoy Brown they were all copy cats.

I gotta agree"Pretty Woman" (by VH and Roy Orbisson) is RIGHT. That's Rock n Roll.

Even Chris Isaak's version is great;

Uhmm. It has already been determined with scientific method that Johnny B. Goode is the defining rock and roll song. So that and 42 is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything is all you need to know.

Cool stuff. Brian Robertson's solo is mind-blowing. Phil is Phil. I love Gary Moore also, but Robertson's solo here is awesome. Rock n Roll is inclusive not exclusive. Whatever blows your hair back! Please enjoy this video.

So are you going to start a threat to identify what that "ultimate question" is? Or just settle for the answer?
