I think I almost got jacked. Monday was one of the first days we had 100+ temperature. It was late at night and I really wanted to take a cool night ride.

I have thought that a scooter rip off would be something like some big dudes throwing my scooter into a van with tinted windows and driving off. Ok, at least just loading a bike into a truck, while I am not looking.

On my way home I thought I could do a quick stop at Sprouts Foods on Oracle. Parking lot is totally empty as the shop closes at 10:00 and I think its before but close to closing time. A white GM medium size SUV with a black trim on the roof parked just after I did. The passenger walked more over to me and my scooter than the doors of the closing shop. It felt like the passenger wanted to walk in the shop with me, he like asked me what I was there to pickup - But the shop had closed a minute before 10:00 as my mobile read 9:59 and I did not answer him. He continued to try to talk scooter but clearly knows nothing and is painfully making no sense trying to make conversation. The driver is now walking towards me and his passenger and his comment walking up to my 74 red rally is how cool the rear rack looks. (Its off a P and doesn't have the 70's spare tire feature. ) Its not cool at all. I answered vaguely as I could and started and got out of there mid sentence - before they got any closer. I had a really weird feeling about the two. Something was not right. They seemed different than the normal old scooter comments. I really think they wanted to get close to me and the bike. I may be wrong. I am just going to make sure I don't put my self in a situation like that again. I could have parked in a more obnoxious and visible spot seen by all and reduced the low visibility parking location. A surprised bike grab would not be impossible. I never suspected that kind of a rip off. Convince a rider that you admire their bike, get close to them, and then force them off - once they start it - it and ride it away, with out any cumbersome loading?

It was such a nice time to ride. I hope it was nothing.

It sounds like you had a close call. I live in Orange County, Ca, and in Huntington Bch, it's reported that 4 scoots get stolen each month. They are not all pristine vintage scooters, but the story is the same. The police won't even look for it. "Call your insurance company" is the standard line.

I've already bought cowl locks and I think I'm going to get that shifter lock as well that goes on the headset. Takes a bit of the "freedom" of riding out of it when you have to worry so much about your bike.

I have a 74 as well, nice!

If I was working at a business and a customer pulled into the parking lot 1 minute before closing time - I would lock the door before the customer gets halfway across the lot.

I wouldn't worry about it. They know nothing about scooters so they probably didn't want to steal it. Maybe they only wanted to take your money and kill you. Good move following your instincts. Clap emoticon Clap emoticon

Collateral damage....
You quoted the post that mentioned guns. Much, much easier to hide your post than to go in and edit your post to remove the quoted passage.
