It's a daunting task that have to clean an engine like that...

The other thing that kills me is when I look in a tank and it looks like it came off the ocean floor...

Just think of the lucky person that gets a Vader barn find many years from now... Razz emoticon

coming clean...

With all of the traveling I've been doing for work I've had little time for the VBC. But now most of the little bits are bagged and tagged. I just need to grab a 3/4 22mm socket to get the lump loose, and then I'll be able to focus on the rebuild.

I'm finally getting there...after almost a year.

Finally manned up and started trying to address the funky carburetion in my P. I love this thread, specifically this post:

https://modernvespa.com/forum/post1830774#1830774

I have been fighting a sagging feeling when I get to high revs, i.e. 2nd gear 30+ MPH, etc. It then kind of "powers through" and gets a bit better at even higher RPM.

Trying to richen up high RPM was a bit of a question mark for me, as I think my main is OK (plug looks good, WOT at lower RPM is fine). I've also had a bit of a low throttle bog at the very bottom. Looking at the chart I realized I could change my BE3 for a BE5 that I already had and go overall richer, with some added love for low throttle. Bingo, big improvement. I think I do actually want to try a bigger main now, and maybe a bit smaller air corrector.

I just had a mental block to working on this as my whole mantra on the P has been "if it ain't broke, don't fix it..."

Nice John! That chart pdxjim posted is good stuff (not entirely sure what the color coded part is trying to covey though). Mixers can be vexing. I know when we finally hit on the right mixer it was like the clouds parted and music started playing... lol... hey, we gotta ride soon!

The color coded part is telling the relative air/fuel difference between the ratings at different throttle range - i.e. a 2 at low range is a 15:1 air fuel and a 8 at low range is a 9:1. I'm not sure how you can actually judge the air fuel itself without knowing the air corrector and the main jet sizing but it's a useful visual aid anyway to understand the magnitude of his rating system.

Hmmm ok ... a little confusing because the chart refers to 8 = "super rich", but there's no corresponding mixer that delivers "8".

It's a continuous scale, that's all. 7 is kind of like 8, no?

It could be worse. Charleston is flooded out from the effects on the hurricane and a dip in the jet stream. All of it should drift north in the next few days so the east coast is in for a soaking!

Cool.. I like The Church.. If it's the same The Church, I saw them play at the La Paloma Theater in Encinitas CA when I was around 16.. Fond memories of those years and lots and lots of shows.. Happy listening Josh. Music is the best.

The Church were one of my faves. Heyday is in my top 10 albums. I Read Steve Kilbey's autobiography a while back. Great read. They're still playing around now. A bit boring now though. More soundscapes than songs.

I know you guys have it bad when it comes to cold and wet, so I don't expect any sympathy.. Cold and wet is just as bad.. Just different.. A couple hours with the doors open and a fan on and it's almost habitable.

LOL.. exactly! You've got my number!

I just went to the North vs South rally.. Great ride. Super twisty, curvy, bumpy.. good technical ride..

Then Jimmy and I had to come home, and we had the most epic ride home I can remember in recent years.. we bombed home from the valley over through the canyon and back home on the PCH then a bit of the freeway, but it was awesome.. hauling ass on totally smooth roads with big sweeping curves, no traffic.. just awesome.. I'm gonna sleep good tonight..

.. AFTER I CLEAN my bike! it did well today.. (I'd clean it anyway Razz emoticon ) but what a great ride.. damn!
