Hey!

I'm a relatively new owner of a Vespa LX50, I'm its second owner since new and have been loving it until the past couple of weeks. When I was on the way
into work one day my vespa started to lose power, then after the traffic lights about half a mile on it cut out. It wouldn't start so then I wheeled it to my work. I got the RAC to come out and have a look at it but it started first time and was revving etc, I even tried going up and down on it and it was fine. So I started on my way home that night and the same thing happened, I ended up having to get it put on the back of a breakdown truck to get it home . I took it to a local garage and they diagnosed it and I had the Piston, Rings, Gaskett and cylinder changed (wasn't the cheapest). And after a couple of weeks of everything seeming going ok (apart from a bit of a lack of power) my scooter is now losing power and cutting out. I managed to nurse it home tonight by adjusting the idle screw and making it run a little rich. However on the way back it was lacking a bit of power. Is it as simple to say that my engines Carb needs a clean?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Nick

How old is the scooter? Is it 2 or 4 stroke?

Check your compression. If low maybe the head needs retorqued.
Check spark plug cap on good/wire in cap good also.
What you describe ,here in states the 4 strokes do that when the CDI is bad/old.Runs till hot then cuts out.Cool off and start.
Could be a fuel issue also.
Id ask guys that fixed it.

Thanks for the reply Mudnman. I've got in touch with the local garage and going to let them have a look over it. It seems to happen after riding it for about 10 minutes or so the CDI issue would seem to make sense. Going to ask them to have a look at the vacuum line as well.

I'll let you know what they say. Thanks!

So I have some information back from the mechanic. It turns out that because my oil pump isn't working that I actually needed to put in 100ml of oil into the fuel tank everytime, because it has burnt the piston and cylinder out I've been told that I'll need to replace it again which will cost quite a bit to get sorted.

Just wanted to run this advice past you guys? Does that even sound logical

I'll get a photo.

I think I misunderstood the mechanic when he said that I needed to put 100ml in the oil tank every time I filled up, when he actually meant the fuel tank as the pump wasn't working.

I've been quoted to replace the cylinder and piston and have learnt my lesson
