Away in the Maine woods it seems I missed a bit of Snoops adventures. Good thing the Saturday mission was aborted or he might have missed some nice riding.

I've enjoyed following along Snoopy's adventures. Hoping he has got Amerivespa on his travel itinerary. I know Snoopy is a lover of speed and would be nice for him to visit IMS on a scooter.

Touchdown!
Howdy everyone,
I've safely touched down at another new destination. Co-ordinates tell me I'm somewhere in middle England. All systems seem fine. I'm just doing some communication and atmosphere checks right now. Once they're done, I'll have a dog nap, then venture outside and get some first views of the new neighborhood. Wish me luck! I'll check in with another report soon. |

Next day delivery is a luxury us Brits often take for granted - it's quite a shock to find that elsewhere five or more days is the norm, even if from only a few hundred miles away.

Hey everybody,
So the capsule took a bit of a beating on re-entry but everything checked out OK. There was a heavy weather system here yesterday so I let it pass and stayed put. I found some emergency cookies in one of the stowage bins and... er.. they tested out fine, definitely good for the job... I.. erm.. just need to get a resupply. So today was much brighter, the sun was out, the batteries were charging well and I ventured outside. Maybe I could discover this new area and plant a flag?! That'd be great for my mission log. But as I looked into the distance.. was that what I thought it was, flying over there? Wow, it was - the Stars and Stripes! Some of my countrymen must have got here before me. By the flag pole was a memorial, to some fellow flyboys! The 92nd Bombardment Group of the 8th United States 8th Army Air Force had flown 308 missions from this airfield, Poddington in Bedfordshire, during the WW2 air war for Europe. There was a bench by the memorial, so I sat a while in the sun underneath the flag and remembered them, those that came home and shared their stories, and those that were left behind. ![]() ![]()

As I was sitting there, I heard a familiar bub-bub-bub of an engine, and a guy pulled up on a shiny white Vespa. He said hello and said his name was Paul. When I said I had loads of buddies all over the world who were Vespa riders, we hit it off straightaway! We chatted a while, I told him about my travels and he offered to put me up for a few days and show me around. Wow, these Brits are pretty cool! We made a few stops on the way back to his home to show me what the area was like. I like it already.

On this day - May 20 1932 Amelia Earhart solo flight
Today marks the anniversary of Amelia Earhart solo flight in her red-and gold Lockheed Vaga cross the Atlantic.
First woman and the second person to fly solo the Atlantic. On May 20th, 1932, five years to the day after Lindbergh, she took off from Harbor Grace, Newfoundland to Paris. Strong north winds, icy conditions, and mechanical problems plagued the flight and forced her to land in a pasture near Londonderry, Ireland. "After scaring most of the cows in the neighborhood," she said, "I pulled up in a farmer's back yard." As word of her flight spread, the media surrounded her, both overseas and in the United States. President Herbert Hoover presented Earhart with a gold medal from the National Geographic Society. Congress awarded her the Distinguished Flying Cross-the first ever given to a woman. At the ceremony, Vice President Charles Curtis praised her courage, saying she displayed "heroic courage and skill as a navigator at the risk of her life." Earhart felt the flight proved that men and women were equal in "jobs requiring intelligence, coordination, speed, coolness, and willpower." ![]() Amelia Earhart with her Lockheed Vega 5b, NR7952, at Culmore, North Ireland after her solo transatlantic flight, 21 May 1932. Bill, expect lots of traffic on the Autobahn on the weekend. There is a bank holiday on Monday and the engine drivers are on an unlimited strike, which has already started.

Bill, honestly, I don't know. It's not a holiday season, only a long weekend, so people probably do trips to the major cities or drive home to their family. Bremen and Hamburg are both larger cities and traffic could be dense near them.

Flyboys!
Next, we all visited the WW2 airfield at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford in Cambridgeshire. Paul's Father-in-Law was having a birthday flight in a DH Rapide, and the airfield was lined with vintage warbirds. I was in flyboy heaven! Paul's daughter Ellie looked after me and gave me lots of cuddles.
I spotted a Spitfire, and a B17 Flying Fortress. Memphis Belle was a cutie! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Before I left, having seen all these great US and UK warbirds, I was given a special momento to take with me on my next flights - a medal. The 1939-45 Air Crew Europe Star, awarded to all US aircrews who flew out of airfields like this. Awesome.

Back on the grid
Working for the past week at the Cape and was completely off the grid. Just checked out the thread and found that our UK friends did a great job of hosting. We can always depend on them!
The pics that were posted are awesome. Will be forwarding Paul's pic of the Memphis Belle to Astronaut Fred Haise. Can't wait for Bill's IB adventure with the little guy. This should be exciting and I'm expecting the unexpected with the two dogs. Thanks also to Sticky and Al for keeping an eye on the thread while I was gone. Good work ![]() |

Was a real pleasure hosting the little guy. He slotted right in to our plans and was great fun. He's welcome back anytime. I was honoured to read about Fred Haise's history over the years and across the miles. Snoopys ribbons show what a great journey he's had since July last year and they're only half full! I wonder where he'll be in July this year when he's due his first travelling birthday - we expect pictures of cake!
Go Snoop! Paul |
