Hi, great forum that I've been reading for a while since I bought a Vespa LX 50 2T - many thanks.

I'm doing a bit of servicing on my bike, mostly out of interest, and I've got a few jobs lined up that I'm going to start work on soon.

However, the previous owner did not clean the inside of this bike AT ALL, and I can't tell whats what just yet. I do intend to take it apart and clean it up, but I'd first like to know roughly what's where so I don't spray water everywhere indiscriminately.

The thing I'd like to start with is cleaning the carburettor and checking the jets. Can anyone point me in the right direction??

I think, on the attached image, that the carburettor is the thing circled in red, but I can't seem to see where the two boot hoses are. I think I need to disconnect these so that I can start to mobilise the carburettor unit etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've labelled 2 cables (I think) as 1 and 2. Could you tell me what they are?? Cable 1 seems to be totally empty and comes from the cylinder housing.

You have correctly identified the carb. #2 is the throttle cable, and #1 is the carb warming duct. It just takes warm air from the cylinder shroud and delivers to the weird rubber cover for the carb.

Cheers
Ah great thanks. I had no idea that the carb needed to be warmed by the cylinder 😕
The weird rubber case for the carb is all torn up - can I get rid?

Also is it OK to most of the stuff you see a bit wet when I clean it?

For some reason the use of orientate annoys me since we already have the word orient for the same meaning. Sorry. Pedantic. Along the lines of regardless and irregardless I guess.

Webster would think otherwise though I have no idea why. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/irregardless

Reminds me of one of my favorite standup bits of all time - Freddy Soto's "Regardless"

Using the word orient as a verb sounds ugly to the ear. Probably why its not used any more.

Maybe for you....

but that could just be your orientation.

Please don't read any justification of moral adequacy into this, ok?
