Hey Guys,

I want to take my MP3 on the road with me on the back of an RV but not sure what are safe carriers without breaking the bank. I know VersaHaul makes a MP3 hitch carrier rated for 600lb. Anybody use this one and is it any good? Can it be made good with a few mods (attach a winch?)

I also know they make a large lift for Class A's that goes for crazy money
$3-5k.

I am not sure what else is out there?? Any suggestions?

I know they did a post about Carriers for taking your MP3 with you (08/09 timeframe) but to be honest some of the links in the post are dead (dont think those co are making them anymore)

Any updated info would be much appreciated

Following is opinion - you will get others that disagree. I don't think you can carry the MP3 on a hitch - there is simply too much weight that extends too far away from the mounting vehicle, which creates additional stress. As you noted, there was a design that a few local welding shops were making a few years ago, but it was designed to fit on a 600 pound hitch receiver - add the MP3 and the hitch mount and, in my opinion, it is just too heavy. Did people do it? Yes. Did I see any horror stories? No. However, I view it too risky.

The "expensive" RV mounts you reference are designed to carry up to 1000 pounds. These require a hitch receiver that wields into the frame of select RV's (only diesel pushers with the frame extending all the way to the rear). I have not seen any of these modified to work for an MP3, but theoretically I suppose they could.

I'd suggest a trailer, even trailer-in-a-bag, if you can modify it for an MP3.

It's a pretty rare vehicle that can support 600 lbs on its rear frame. Class III hitches are well below that, with regard to tongue weight.

That is, unless you drive something like a dually F350 that can do this. Even a Prius can pull a trailer with an MP3 on it.

You do not say what RV you have. I would not do this carrier with anything short of a large Class A or a Diesel Pusher. I would also not attempt this with anything less than a 1 ton truck. The hitch should be at least a class 3 or preferred a class 4. 500 lbs of scooter plus 250 lbs of lift hanging off the rear of a vehicle will affect the handling.

My only comment on this thread, additional to what everyone has already stated, would be that you need to have absolute faith in whatever trailer/hitch setup you have before you put your MP3 on it and start driving down the highway. You don't want to find out that your setup was "wrong" when the bike falls off the hitch or the hitch comes of the car (or your car handles different and you get in a wreck) at 70-mph on the highway.

I would recommend a small utility trailer over a bumper hitch specifically made for the MP3 since this gives you more options for securing the bike and also would still be useful if you want to haul a different bike (or different load altogether) in the future. Utility trailers that will easily hold the MP3 (something at least about 8-feet long) are cheaper options than the bumper hitch at which you are looking.

I get see the desire for the hitch mount. Not being limited to 55mph on a 70mph highway. The ability to backup without considering what the trailer is doing etc. That said I would only do it with a diesel pusher after I win the lotto
