I love the look of the Mickey mouse tail light, but not the price, I've seen them go for more than $400 on ebay.

Does anyone reproduce them?

for those that don't know what a mickey mouse tail light is...

Google image search "mickey mouse tail light"

things like this:

I have one sitting on the shelf with the intent of pulling a mold from it, some day...

If/when I ever do I'd probably cast it in plastic or composite.

I wondered if one was coming. You should have no problem selling that.

The hardest to replicate is the aluminum (?) bezel for the reflectors, perhaps. It's the reason Clauss Studios haven't made them. I know -- I asked. 3D printer, anyone?

Ready for the million dollar idea?

Mickey mouse tail light with LED turn signals in the reflectors. trade mark. copyright. all rights reserved.

we will sell millions.

I did a lot of manufacturing in china, the trick is not to pull a mold off the OG but to make a really great CAD model of it, perhaps 3D scans, so they can cut a proper mold out of milled steel... my hunch is that plastic would be prone to breaking, cast AL is pretty cheap to tool up for.

I wouldn't use a 3D printer for this, no need and to expensive. I was thinking along the lines of making a fiberglass mold and then laying new ones up in fiberglass or carbon.

Only issue is the one I have is almost too good to even strip the paint off. Almost, but I would feel bad about taking the rivets out.

Claus makes (or has in the past) the main lens. would need to figure out the reflectors but stainless base and some glue (and could include an LED) would get the right look. Actually LEDs would be the way to go for the whole thing, that way you don't have to do all the bulb mounts and reflector.

That's a good looking specimen that someone would be very happy to have. I agree about keeping it unmolested.

I actually had both reflectors when I got the bike but somebody "borrowed" one of them from right under my nose. The main lens was broken and beyond repair so I replaced it with a Clauss.

You wouldn't happen to have an extra reflector, would you?

Agreed!

Actually, if we found the right foundry, these would be a snap to produce in aluminum... in small batches of say... 100-150 bodies... we could probably just sell them with no wiring or lenses and still sell em like hotcakes...

i still think it would be cool to turn the small defectors into flashing LED turnsignals...

There must be a lot of us that have missing reflectors on those things. Even to the uninitiated it is quite obvious that something's missing. Turn signals would be a great idea. Do it!

nah, its pretty unlikely Piaggio would care in the first place, but copyrights only last 2o-25 years.

There are dead similar ones at NAPA, eBay, and such. Except the bolt width is much larger. Only go for a couple of bucks.

I can't imagine making something to a different spec would be very expensive, if someone is motivated.

if i could get my hands on a MM tail light i could have one of my Industrial design students CAD it up and we could be printing them on the SLS (or anything else on UIUC campus) rapid prototype machine with in a week..

But, MMs are as rare as unicorn farts... if anyone wanted to LEND me theirs for a month or so i thing i could start printing them out...

Getting a nice paintable finish on a SLS part can be a real bitch because the material is hard/porous

I could have a buddy in china source reflectors to spec... but again would need one to send to him.

To me, the reflectors are more interesting than the body. The bodies last, but those little reflectors go quick.

That being said, I have one that I could donate. The stem is snapped, but it should be complete enough to get specs from.

Send me a PM if you're serious.

the reflectors are the pain in the ass for this item, as mentioned before. They have an aluminum disc behind them and are a pretty small size ( under 1", IIRC ). Most folks i know that lose them use the ones pictured above...the license plate attachment bolts from autozone... they are smaller and thicker than the originals but most people don't know the difference.

The taillight ONLY appeared on certain US MARKET bikes in 1966... so the 66 Bluebadge Allstate primavera, and the 1966 us market SS180. I don't know that i've seen them on any other models from that year, stock.

It's why they are not only rare, but with zero spare parts supply for them. ( minus the big lens that Clauss Studios was repopping for a while )

If we only got the reflectors made... we'd need to order a lot to make it worth the factory's time to produce... i should imagine the MOQ (minimum order quantity) would be around 2-5k lenses.

Haha! That would last the vespa world 10 years!

Actually, a repop without the reflector ears would be pretty smart. It's a good looking light without the reflector obstacle and the value of originals is preserved. You still need a reflector for the bulbs though.

Been thinking the same thing. If the bulbs were replaced with LED then it wouldn't even need the reflector.

OK, I'll see about working on this project.

Yes it will! done right should allow input of AC/DC 3-30V

Run the input through a bridge rectifier and bucktoot

The reflectors could be reproduced, I may be willing to sacrifice one. The base is spun aluminum, Clauss could create the plastic bit easy.
