Wondering what the laws are regarding scooters on interstate freeways. Somebody told me that anything less than 250 cc are not allowed on the interstate freeway system in Ohio. Is this valid? Is this a national law or just Ohio. Not that I want to take my scooter on the freeway but want to know the law.

Thanks

There are no national laws. See above.

For my own safety, I would not ride anything under a 250cc scooter on a "freeway" in the midwest.

That's just my personal opinion.

If you can travel at the minimum set speed limit, you can legally ride on the highway.

Yes I believe it varies from state to state. California specifically states 150cc or higher for example. Some may not have an displacement requirement.

What matters is the definition of a "motor-driven cycle" -- which is a motorcycle, not a motorized bicycle, which is a different thing.

Some States don't, and you can ride any scoot that can do the minimum speed.
Some States follow the Federal definition, five brake horsepower. (Ohio)
Some States follow California's definition, less than 150cc.
Texas defines a motor-driven cycle as under 250cc, but is for driver licensing, not for going on the freeways, since no cop will cite a 100 mph Ninja 250 as too slow for the Interstates.

My 150 is a hair over 150cc and is legal in any State. I cruise a bit over 60 mph on the Interstates. Over the Grapevine I pass loaded semi-tractor/trailers. I know my 150 is capable. It is far faster than the Fiat 238 camper that I had mid-'70's mid-'80's. That thing could only do an indicated 57 mph on the flat with no wind.

"Somebody told me..." is generally wrong. Anyone wants to claim is illegal will have to cite the law that is posted on an authoritative site.
