It seems that most (if not all) SEA 'restored' Vespas are largeframes and built in the 1960's. Why do you never see 1970's examples? Were these things built in Italy and exported to SEA and were they exactly the same as VBB, VBC and VLB scoots which were sold in Italy?
Of course they where built in Italy. Piaggio exported scooters all over the world you know? Piaggio had oficial dealerships in Vietnam. These where the same exact scooter you could buy at your corner dealer in Rome. Vespas where only built in Europe (Italy, Spain, France, Germany) until early 70's when Baja and Danmotor started licensed production AFAIK.
Why no 70s models?
Figure it out. There was like a big war in Vietnam - so um.... it was no longer feasible or logistically possible to have dealerships and distributors. Then the country became communist and new Italian scooters being imported would be too capitalist and bourgeois and expensive.
So,,,,this is where bodgery comes in. Local knowledge and whatever it takes to keep them running is why they are still around and hacked into the glabal market.
