It seems that most (if not all) SEA 'restored' Vespas are largeframes and built in the 1960's. Why do you never see 1970's examples? Were these things built in Italy and exported to SEA and were they exactly the same as VBB, VBC and VLB scoots which were sold in Italy?
What rock have you been hiding under?
Of course they where built in Italy. Piaggio exported scooters all over the world you know? Piaggio had oficial dealerships in Vietnam. These where the same exact scooter you could buy at your corner dealer in Rome. Vespas where only built in Europe (Italy, Spain, France, Germany) until early 70's when Baja and Danmotor started licensed production AFAIK.
Why no 70s models?
Figure it out. There was like a big war in Vietnam - so um.... it was no longer feasible or logistically possible to have dealerships and distributors. Then the country became communist and new Italian scooters being imported would be too capitalist and bourgeois and expensive.
So,,,,this is where bodgery comes in. Local knowledge and whatever it takes to keep them running is why they are still around and hacked into the glabal market.

They essentially stopped being imported to Vietnam after the communists took over in the early 70's. The economy was terrible, they were too expensive for most people to afford, private ownership was frowned upon, and for years after the war trade with western countries was almost nil. See Cuba.

almogavar1969 Thank for for your most gracious reply. My question was about SEA in general, not just Vietnam. Whilst I realise that the Vietnamese were unlikely to be buying Ford Mustangs and BigMacs from the country that was napalming it to a pulp, I did not appreciate that they had ceased importing Vespas from Italy. Silly me !!

You asked what it was worth - and in a nutshell: nothing, nada, zilch. It is a SEA vehicle built up to deceive some poor unsuspecting sap of it's true value. At it's best: a restaurant display. At it's worse: a dangerous money pit. Remember - you asked.

You started with a question, you didn't like the answer, and then YOU started with the "condesention" (sic). B0dge sellers don't get to come on here, pretend they are just "innocently asking for a price", then tell us all off - laughing as they do so - when they claim to have scammed someone out of their money. You gave your lack of ignorance away already. You know what you have, you know we are right, and you are done here

It's funny the pinner comes here asking a question from a community that has decades of combined knowledge and experience. He doesn't like the answer and then comes back claiming he sold it for $5200 or something and tries insulting everyone. Now comes back again crying that we are snobs etc- all butt hurt. As metioned above. You came and asked, got the answers so deal with it like a man.

I wonder if "needs a shift cable" means a buyer can't test ride it? I wonder what else mechanically lies hidden because of a buyer being unable to test ride it?.

"$6000 o.b.o." at bottom of ad. $4000 in ad title.

No short answer to that question, but I'll say "no". I think intent to defraud would have to be proven, and that would be difficult to prove, since the seller could just claim ignorance. Even though his "all original" claim is laughable.

A seller could be sued civilly by a buyer since the burden of proof is less, but in many instances the cost isn't worth the trouble. That's the reason for the phrase "buyer beware." IOW- know what you are doing and getting into BEFORE you part with any substantial money.

If he sells it and the new owner comes here, it would definitely establish no ignorance of the issue.

He should have taken his buddies advice and tried to sell it as art piece

I should have also said that no police or prosecutor would agree to bring any charges. They would just tell the buyer to sue the seller as it's a civil matter.

I once saw a shifter tube brake off on a bodge on a slow turn, thankfully he kept it upright. I could never sleep at night if I was selling an unsafe turd like that.

It depends on who the clerk is at the marriage license office.
