Not that I intend to race my MP3, just curious if any 1/4 mile times posted anywhere for these machines. I sure do like the looks of the new BV 350 with the big wheels. I might have to have one of them too!!!. I have had alot of motorcycles-but there is something about scooters I get more excited about.

I doubt it as the MP3 weighs more and the BV should have a big advantage on take off.

I own both and have no idea. I believe the BV is much quicker from 0-35 mph, but have never tested it.

I have to agree with klaborde.

I have had a few run in's with quite a few vespas and each time, they have handed me my ass.

the weight of the MP3 is just too high compared to those.

Why are lotus' so fast with so little hp compared to higher HP cars?

power to weight.

I even had a guy on a classic vespa, very tuned by the way, tell me that i had no chance, and you know what, i did not havea chance. haha.

Oh well.

kW/tonne or HP/US (short) ton? Or furlongs/fortnight?

The figures are meaningless without units! Razz emoticon

The ratio was quoted twice in pass issues of http://www.mcnews.com/ , I assume it would be HP/US.

The HP rating of the MP3 500 engine is 40. The weight of the bike is 570 lbs (.285 short ton). I don't see any way to add, subtract, multiply, or divide those two numbers and come out with 19:1.

Add a 170 pound rider, and the MP3 500 will have 19:1.
A BV350 with 170 pound rider will give approx 17:1

Power to weight is conventionally given with hp/lb or kW/kg. The power to weight of the MP3 is therefore about 0.07 in hp/lb - about four times that of a container ship, and a hundredth of the space shuttle (going by Wikipedia figures. ).

Just received a reply from Editor-in-Chief of Motorcycle Consumer News.

Maynard,
We tested the Piaggio MP3 500 in May, 2008. At that time, it made exactly 30.0 hp and weighed 576.5 lbs. for a power-to-weight ratio of 1:19.22, not the other way around.
Thanks,
Dave

Interesting. Top Speed thinks that the previous Piaggio 500 engine (the 1 spark plug 460) produced 39 horsepower. Since the 400 engine was rated at 34 HP, it would have been fairly discouraging if the earlier "500" engine was only producing 30 HP.

I would guess it depends on how those figures came about. MCN may have actually tested for HP at the rear wheel where the spec sheet shows HP at the crank.
