Really interesting!

Is anyone else surprised that scooters are classed with bicycles in terms of which lane they use? That was super cool. And I love aiming the shark teeth toward the car drivers

Thanks for posting this!

We're so far behind in this country...
Circles are so cool and seem to be less costly than lights. Why wait when no one is around?

I wonder if mopeds and scooters with engines below a certain size can use the bicycle lanes, while scooters and motorcycles with larger engines use the car lanes? Seemed like there were some scooters using one, and some the other.

The scooters are allowed in the bike lanes because they are limited to 25kph.

Love round abouts. He up with them in Boston. We called them rotaries. They freaky enable traffic flow. Santa Cruz recently installed 2 of them. There's a few other places I think they would make a huge difference in cross town traffic

Best

Thats rad! Lots of courteous, attentive people quickly moving about. Its a shame the one roundabout near me can't be used to its full potential. People are always jamming it up, trying to go in reverse, stopping when theres no one to give way to, driving on the curbs etc.

I think the problem with the roundabout in the USA is that it replaces the four way stop sign. In a four way stop, you give way to the driver on your right. In a roundabout, you give way to the traffic already on the roundabout. For drivers in the USA who drive on the right hand side, this oncoming traffic will be coming from the left. This means giving way to traffic from the opposite direction to that of a four way stop (which a roundabout replaces). I believe it is this confusion that makes introducing them to the USA difficult (though my theory could be wrong).

Selling and installing traffic lights is big business and I have long suspected that the proliferation of unnecessary lights in the UK is partly due to local authorities being "incentivised" by unscrupulous sales forces.

Worst case is where lights are installed on roundabouts. This causes continuous tailbacks in urban areas which in turns leads to more pollution.

You're definitely right compared to a 4 way stop, but is it that difficult for people to make one adjustment when it comes to roundabouts? You know approaching and going in that it is different from the norm. There's signs alerting you too. Being PTW folks automatically makes us ahead of the curve when it comes to paying attention and making changes while driving, but is it really that difficult or am I missing something?

not liking the stopping as you turn off idea if a bike is in that bit of space

would cause loads of crashes here as the bikes would be in a lorries blind spot at the same point as it is turning off the island (rounderbout circle)

Rotarys are common here in New England, and more being installed all the time. Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont loaded with them and now they're starting to appear in Rhode Island.

They work fine.

The best part is that here in Little Rhody they usually replace intersections with 4-way Stop signs. The reason this is good is that nobody seems to know exactly what the rules are for 4-ways. They end up being roadblocks as nobody wants to go, or free-for-alls with everybody aiming at me and my scoot!!

If it's under 50cc the scooters over here in Hawaii can use the bike/breakdown lanes. You get a lifetime bike/moped sticker for $15. You can't ride on bike paths tho. Got the sticker on my LX since i'll never take it on the freeway. Tad to under powered for our gully's and mountains out here for my liking. MC"S even use the bike lanes if there's traffic. Cops don't pull them over.

The old rotaries in New England, at least the ones I remember in Central Mass, were big 1/4 mile across, 25 (official)mph beasts and originally traffic on the rotary yielded to traffic coming off the highway - Rt 2 in my home town. The first time I came off the highway after they had changed the yield I almost killed myself!
