As there are a few times riding in my area may result in fuel stations further than a tank of gas, I wanted to carry additional fuel. I purchased 2 64oz stainless steel water bottles from REI. I asked the fellow what was the difference between these and those labeled as fuel containers and he said they use food grade SS in the water bottles. I strayed them with black Flex Seal which nearly perfectly matches the flat black 300 Super. Flex Steel is a rubberized material which should protect the containers. I then used shrink tubing to cover the worm drive clamps. I then simply mounted them to the bottom of the rack. Some one else on MV showed some clamps with yellow hand tighteners but I could not find any in my area. I purchased a nut driver to tighten and loosen the clamps. Actually, it might be better as some one could not quickly remove the containers.

i think gas containers aren't the same as water containers. For one thing gas containers need a fuel vapour/venting system. Another, gas will damage some plastics- eventually causing leaks.

Fuel rated bottles are very different from water bottles. The "Fill To" line is important because it leaves a void or head space for the material to expand. They are a lot stronger to contain the thermal expansion and vapor pressure of fuel. The threads are stronger and the cap is made to be compatible with the solvent nature of gasoline. Storing fuel in a water bottle is potentially very dangerous. The first long day lying on its side in the hot sun will be educational.

Error on the Side of Safety
I am not a chemical engineer, but I think containers are
rated for holding fuel. You have done a super job matching the scooter. Perhaps you can find the same sized approved fuel container and color match the same way. Question: Could your current fuel container be a bomb? Bob Copeland |

I like the idea but went for different implementation. This is already in the mail, should arrive this week:

Fuel container
I plan on doing a static test on the bottle by filling it 3/4 full and setting out in the sun to see what may happen.
