Greetings All,
I own a 1980 Vespa 100 Sport (small frame) that I want to
"beef up" or upgrade the speed performance for my wife
who wants to take part in an all female only, small frame, long distance
race, called the Corsette (located on the east coast).
I want her to have more speed than the 100 Sport offers but I also
want her to be safe. The 100 Sport is also only a 3 speed manual
transmission. Will upgrading this bike require me to change the gearbox?
&
Do any of you speed freak/racing types have any recommendations on
kits to purchase that is relatively easy to install and reliable runner after the upgrade? I've seen many kits, Malossi, Polini, etc. but have always rode stock
bikes so this is new territory for me...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

i've got that exact same bike but before I had it someone replaced stock engine with a VMA 125cc smallframe engine with a 4 speed transmission. Not sure if you can just replace the 3 gears with 4 on these things as engine/trans is all one component. I did upgrade stock carb to a malossi 20/20.. All in all it's pretty snappy now..

Well... you do not havve to upgrade the gearbox, however if you want to get decent speed out of it, raising the primary gearing is neccissary and then the gaps between gears get a bit wide.

A good basic cheap build that gets you a good bang for buck woulf be a polin i 135, polini pipe, 4 speed gearbox, and a primary upgear. Electronic ignition isn't neccissary, but a good idea and rather easy with your engine.

If this kind of parts swap is beyond you get ahold of me privatly- we're just getting into winter rebuild season at my shop andc do a decent amoujnt of motor rebuilds by mail.

As above.

Small frame engines are awesome.

The 100 sport had four gears if i remember?

I had a yanky one with indicators and odd rear light.

My primavera did 65 mph with ports matched to barrel etc, i was only 8 stone wet through at the that age so that might have affected speed

I had a sports clutch with more plates which was very good.

Large frame px vespas are the device of the devil and akin to supermarket trolleys.

The GTS is awesome
