The last time I bought a car for me (not for the wife) was way back in 1986 when I graduated from college. I bought a 1986 Mazda B2000 pickup truck. I drove that thing into the dirt and put 315K miles on it until 1999 when I gave it away. Since that time, I've only had PTWs. Over the last few months I've really started wanting a car again. Not a luxury car but something I can throw down the road and have some fun with. After riding a 1949 Harly-Davidson for my daily transportation for the last 12 years, I picked a car that is about as far from that sort of technology (or lack of technology) as you can go. Yesterday I ordered a 2016 Subaru WRX STI. This is basically an AWD turbo charged rally car. But it does have 4 doors and a back seat that can easily carry two full sized adult passengers. The engine is about 10 years old so it's a very "known" platform with lots of aftermarket parts in case I want to boost it a bit. I doubt I'll do much if anything past a stage 2 kit. But it's nice to know there is a lot of support up to and including fully built engine upgrades if I go really crazy.

I might get the car as soon as Oct 12th if my local dealer can arrange a trade with a dealer in California. If not, I'll be looking at an 8 to 12 week wait. I've waited 30 years to buy my next new car, so I guess I can wait another 12 weeks Laughing emoticon

Subarus are good cars - very popular in my home state of VT due to their utility in the snow and mud seasons. One of my friends has a WRX now, and it's a cool car. His was lowered by the previous owner, though, and I do not recommend this. They come with stiff sporty suspension to begin with, and that mod just makes it nigh intolerable on bumps in the road.

Apparently performance parts are readily available for the WRX too. A guy at work had a WRX. When I first hear it start I never would have guessed what it was. Subaru has come a long way from my '79 hardtop with 95hp!

The WRX STI is basically a WRX with a bunch of factory performance upgrades already installed. The WRX does have the new FA motor too. Makes less power but the power does come on earlier in the RPM range. I'd bet the FA motor will show up in the STI in another couple years.

Congrats! Those are super fun to drive, at least were 5 years ago. I'm sure they are even more fun now. That's sounds fun and amazing. I'm having fun today with a 1996 Porsche 993 Targa that I'm selling for my neighbor. Also a lot of fun!

great choice on getting a Subie. I occasionally drive for my dealer on dealer trades. tomorrow they want me to drive to Lexington, Ky for them.

we have had 5 Subies, with our current one a 2015 outback limited with eye sight.

Laughing emoticon yeah, I don't think I'll torture my passengers. One of the nice things about this car, when you have passengers on board, select "intelligent" drive mode and drive it easy with a more gradual throttle response curve. But when you are alone or with a willing passenger, put it in "sport" or "sport#" mode and hang on! It doesn't have the gut wrenching power of a Dodge Hellcat, but it will go around corners much better.

-Craig

EDIT: I'll post photos when I have the car. All I can post today are brochure photos.

Good choice on car. You'll love it. I own a 2015 WRX Limited. Best car I've owned (and I have owned a bunch). Blast to drive, and they're fast - mine is faster now that I flashed the ECU with a Cobb Accessport. Stage 1 on the way to Stage 2 upgrades - MWAHAHAHAHA.

PS. I suspect you will not be using "intelligent" drive much. Just saying.

I've already been looking at the COBB stage 1 kit. It's supposed to help with 91 pump gas (best we get here) and also produce a bit more torque down low.

The new FA motor in the WRX its really nice. Produces better power at 2000 RPM than the EJ motor in the STI. Give subaru a couple years and the FA will be making more power at peak than the bigger EJ.

Cobb actually reduced my low end pull of the regular wrx and shifted the powerband into the middle and upper rpms. This made more linear power and is faster just about everywhere, but less dramatic at stop and very low end.

Make sure you read up on your STI and Cobb before you pull the trigger. If you are modifying your exhaust, intake, down pipe, etc, then you will need a professional tune and Cobb is one for several options to do it. Highly recommended. You do pay to play meaning that of you do have an engine issue at some point, they (Subaru) can tell you had an ecu flash and your warranty repair may be a hassle or out of pocket. It's a risk but worth it in my opinion so long as you do the homework. Lots of good wrx communities that are very willing to help each other (similar to this vespa community) - PM me if you want/need recommendations on where to look.

Congrats, caschnd1! As others have mentioned, don't lower it. We've got a 2013 Forester which is the last year of the bullet proof four speed automatics. It's the first automatic that I've ever owned. Yeah, it's a four speed but that boxer engine keeps it from leaning much, if at all, in the corners. Much more fun to drive than it's competitors.

Lastly, since you appear to love Subaru, vintage, and scooters, may I suggest a Fuji Rabbit?

Subaru's are awesome!
Congrats!

I have a 2014 Outback that we use as a family hauler (got a 7 month old we have to lug around). And a 2015 Honda Fit for city and cheap gas driving.

Subaru's are some of the best drivers. The Winter here in Chicago has proven it's worth. And the towing ability for two scooters is great too!

Nice choice.

The fastest car I have ever driven is a WRX that I considered buying 12 years ago. My son Sam and I drove it around and I couldn't help but to use all the power all of the time. It was a rush. And that one was slow compared to what you are getting.

I run a 1999 Miata in local autocross events. WRX's and STI's used to be heavily represented but have been supplanted by the BRZ FRS crowd. But the WRX/STI cars were very fast on course. Acceleration is amazing and they handle very well, especially those that have been modified with coil overs and turbo upgrades. One driver, a mechanic with a heavily modified car, keeps breaking his clutch, so be careful about the added power. Personally, I believe it to be plenty fast out of the box.

Have fun and be careful to watch out for the law.

Jealous! I was thinking about buying a WRX, but I'm going to get a BMW F800R motorcycle instead. I think I might be ruined on cars for a while by 2 wheeled vehicles.

My wife will never part with her '05 WRX.

It does require a bit of concentration to drive as the steering is quite responsive. The suspension is a bit stiff for oldsters like us, it is not a cross-country tourer, but damn it is a fun car to drive.

BTW, except for maintenance, it has never, ever been in the shop.

ABTW, they respond to tuning marvelously. Moderate upgrades will yield tongue-swallowing power.

Congrats, and enjoy.

Congrats. Going over to the dark side,eh? Laughing emoticon When i have to get a car over here i haven't a clue what it will be. Probably just a clunker. I got a car for my graduation from college. Maroon Camero. My mom bought me a burnt orange one 3 years later. My first car that i bought was this (almost 36 years ago ). Smile. Paid $11,000 in 1980. It was a 280Z number 1001, It was the precursor to the 300ZX Turbo. Proud to say i never got a speeding ticket. Enjoy your new ride.

Since my daily driver since 2003 has been a 1949 Harley or a Vespa P200e, I think the STI is going to feel fairly luxurious. My last cross country trip was on the Harley. No rear suspension makes for feeling every bump Laughing emoticon

Beautiful car Judy! I've always liked the early Zs.

Thanks. Sorry to hack your thread but it was the same amount of years. When i came back from Saudi i bought a blue (very pretty blue 1984) 300ZX turbo. It was called Nissan not Datsun. That car was fast. 8) Didn't get a speeding ticket with that one either. Post pics when you get it please. Your right those cars were fun to drive. Handled beautifully. Here it is. The 1980 one i should of kept. It's become a sort of collectors item. They should be driven and it went to a good home. In the end that's what matters.

This guys review of the WRX STI was good. I like his sense of humor. Keep in mind, the price he quotes is in Australian dollars. MSRP in the US is about $34,300. It's a lot of car for that kind of money. The base WRX (non STI) is around $25,000. That's an even sweeter deal unless you really want all the racing bits found on the STI.

That was a great review of the STI. Very informative and a good sense of humor.

I was surprised that he wanted a CVT WRX STI. I have never heard anything good about CVT in cars. Then again, I do live under a rock. So maybe they have gotten better over the years.

It seems like most sports cars are going to paddle shifters and are forgoing the traditional clutch. I like a clutch. Then again, I'm a bit old school.

That car is a great value for the money.

I was also surprised that he wanted a CVT in the STI. I'd have to wonder if the CVT could stand up to the punishment this type of car will give it. I'd much prefer to see a dual clutch gear box like the VW Golf R has in it, if I wanted an automatic. But like you, Strick, I'd rather have a manual gearbox with a clutch.

Got the garage cleaned up an organized this morning. Now we can park two cars inside easily.

Nice car, the Sti. After only two years of being without a car I broke down and bought a slightly used Mazda MX-5. Not near as powerful as the Sti but a fun little roadster. This summer has been so hot that getting gear on for a blistering inner city commute was becoming a chore. Enjoy your new ride and I hope there is no danger of you becoming just a recreational rider. Seems that has been my fate for the last month :/

The day has arrived!
After 7 weeks of waiting, my STi arrived yesterday. I was able to pick it up this evening. What a thrilling ride home. This car is very quick. Not brutally fast like many muscle cars but much more capable in the corners.

Photos aren't great but it's all I've got for now.

Fun cars. I had only the plain Jane WRX but was still able to scare myself on a regular basis. Downside is they like to drink premium, if you can't keep your foot out of it will see mpg in the teens.

Nothing "plain Jane" about a WRX. That's a sweet machine and plenty fast.
Yeah, I'm probably looking at about 19mpg. But I didn't buy it for the fuel mileage. Razz emoticon
