I was booking up the FDR this morning and a loud high pitch sound started coming from what seemed like the back left of my 150 ET4 along with de acceleration which was beyond scary.... I got off the road way and still had power enough to get to where I was going about 20 more blocks....
when I turned it off then back on again I noticed the kick start lever quickly went down....
then engine turned off, still high pitch sound then I started it again this time kick start lever quickly went all the way pointing down and is jammed there! All of the vespa shops (2 in NYC) are closed today and motorcycle garages!!! I put the cover on it and jumped on a bus but I am so pissed and freaked out!!!! I think someone maybe was sitting on my Vespa last night and stepped on that lever and I rode it without knowing that.... anyone ever experience this? Please I am so freaked out! Everything was fine with it when I parked it last night, never any problems before. THanks.

Hmm tomorrow when you get back to your scoot try moving the kickstart up and down to see if you feel it engage and fully disengage. If it does great! Then try starting the scoot on the stand and try revving it to see if your noise comes back at any certain RPM or if anything weird happens. If everything's still looking good CAREFULLY ride to your mechanic and tell them about what happened unless you have the tools to do a belt/inspection and can pop the variator cover.

For several years I had a continuous "chirp" that occurred when I accelerated at freeway speeds coupled with low top end speed. I chirp replaced my variator (myself using videos from Scooterwest) and the squeak is gone and my top end is back to 80mph indicated.

Thank you guys I took it to the shop first thing this morning. The Kickstart lever wouldn't budge, another Vespa friend told me to take a hammer and bang it back into place (which I probably shouldn't have done but I don't think it made it any worse!) Basically the spring came loose in there and boomeranged around and messed with the belt and whatever else is spinning in there! So it's not a hard fix or a terribly damaging situation and they don't think anyone messed with it, they have seen this before... the only hold up is apparently the parts have to be ordered so it takes anywhere from 7-10 days and that just SUCKS for me because here in NYC every world leader is here except for N. Korea and the traffic is HELL! I will post a video so if anyone else ever experiences this they will know it's not the end of the world. here's a link https://instagram.com/p/8LbJLStEkT/?taken-by=curiousk9s I also noticed the wheel didn't move but regardless, it's being taken care of. the parts are about 100.00 and labor 250.00
I will post a full update after I get the receipt.

If you need parts in a couple days, let us know. They are probably already ordered by your dealer, but if we can be of help we will.

From the video your kickstart gear is stuck engaging. No idea if that's the squeal you heard or if it was the belt. When you start the motor you're turning the variator which spins the kickstart. They all kind of mesh together.

Did your mechanic give you a list of what they're replacing? I'm curious what 250$ In labor equates to. In California that's 3 hours worth of work.

Ummm, I snapped the kickstarter gear on my ET2 doing that with a rubber mallet. I would never, ever suggest someone use a hammer on their kickstarter. Maybe this Vespa friend knows more than I do? That's entirely possible. All I can say is, my personal experience has taught me not to do that.

the 250 labor is 2 hours of work in NYC
When I finally get my Vespa back I will post a detailed receipt!
I should have had the guy send me photos of it all pulled apart...
I can't remember the details of what he said now....
THanks you guys for chiming in.

The final outcome
Apparently the spring on the kickstart came loose and broke the gear spindle. so the loud squeal was metal on metal....
These guys I went to sucked. They took weeks!
I also had them throw some new brake pads on the front
and granted this is a few months back...
I am wondering if they bled the brakes???
The back brake light stays ON ALL THE TIME
and the front brakes feel locked when Im at a stop so I have to roll back to move forward without a weird drag! UGH!
I think something up with Caliper and to top it off rear tire flat...
weather been so bad and cold in NYC I just haven't been riding so haven't addressed this stuff ... but Spring is upon us so if I can't do this myself I will be finding a real Vespa mechanic.
