I have recently bought a four year old PX150 and today I swapped the rear and spare wheel, just to see how that works. The mounting plate has left a big impression on the spare's sidewall. I suspect someone used an impact driver to tighten the wheel. Should I be worried? Is there some kind of protection missing?

I forgot to take a picture of the mounting point, but it doesn't look deformed or anything.

I'm not sure that it's an impact wrench that made that impression.. perhaps the wheel was installed backwards? That would cause the tire to sit much closer to the frame than the regular way. Perhaps if they installed the spare while it was deflated, then torqued it up nice and tight, then inflated it....

Mine does the same thing and before anyone asks, yes, I put the spare on the right way with the shallow side of the rim towards the bike, the reverse of how it goes on the wheel hub.

It's like the studs that mount the spare are about 5-10 threads too short and the tire gets pushed hard into the frame. I've tried some nylon spacers to position it a little further away and it helped some. I've also let some air out of the tire to help even more. (I carry a double action compact bicycle pump and tire gauge in my tool box).

I don't know if it's just the later PXs, but it appears to be normal. Now, whether or not it's bad for the tire I don't know.

Did all PXs with spares do this?

Thanks. The valve was at the three o'clock position and pointing inwards. I have often heard people complain that they cannot measure the tyre pressure of the spare wheel, so I guess that is the right way round.
