Stolen from the Secrets of Paris website as Heather writes better than I.
First there was Velib', the municipal bike-sharing program. Then came Autolib' with its cute electric cars. Now the City of Paris is now beta-testing a new program called CityScoot, a self-service electric scooter rental program scheduled to roll out in 2016 as part of the Paris Climate Conference initiative to "go green".
You can sign up to be one of the beta-testers if you live in Paris (and can fill out the French sign-up form). As these are small electric scooters, a driving license isn't required if you're born before 1988.
More from the press:
Developed by a private company of the same name and supported by the City of Paris, Cityscoot is the first self-service electric scooter rental service in the French capital. Ahead of the Paris Climate Conference (COP21) that will take place at the end of the year, this new project once again demonstrates the ecologically-minded dynamism and innovation of Parisian entrepreneurs.
Thanks to a built-in GPS system, Cityscoot scooters are 'free floating', meaning that unlike the Vélib' bikes and Autolib' cars, Cityscoot users may pick up and return the scooters wherever they wish within broadly defined zones. Following the test phase launched this week, the service will open to the public at the beginning of 2016, with the gradual deployment of a full fleet of 1,000 scooters. The cost of renting a Cityscoot vehicle will be EUR3 for 15 minutes.
Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris and Marie-Pierre de la Gontrie, President of Autolib' Métropole have supported the creation of this innovative project from the start. Cityscoot will benefit from the municipality's prior experience with Autolib' and Vélib' and the city's 300 Autolib' charging stations - equipped with sockets for two-wheeled vehicles - will be made available to Cityscoot scooters, all the while ensuring a balanced sharing of the public space.20,000 parking spaces for two-wheeled vehicles
As pledged by Mayor Hidalgo, Paris will create 20,000 parking spaces for motorcycles by 2020. During this period, the City will also pursue the installation of new electric charging points at Autolib' stations, delivery points, and service stations belonging to the City, mostly located along the périphérique ring road.
