I have converted my friends GL150 to electronic ignition. Unfortunately he bought the following horrible Baja kit

http://www.sip-scootershop.com/en/products/conversion+kit+bajaj+eignit_50025000

After hours and hours of problem solving I have noticed the following;

When you turn the engine using the kick start the timing gun shows 23 degrees BTDC. However as soon as the engine starts the bike advances by approximately 50 degrees and fires at about 73 degrees BTDC.

I have bought a new CDI but the same thing happens so I assume that the pick up on the stator plate is faulty.

Am I not seeing something here? I would have assumed that with faulty electronic ignition kits you would get no spark or an intermittent spark. Is it common for faulty kits to change the timing?

It can happen - yes. I had a BGM stator with bad pickup on my Lambretta that would advance timing by a bunch. Not as much as your kit there, but yes a bad pickup can do that.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I agree that the quality of those kits is poor.

I'm undecided to spend EUR20 on a new pick up to see if that solves the problem or toss the entire kit now.

Any suggestions on an electronic ignition kit to buy. Standard GL engine except for SIP road pipe.

Just out of interest guys...whats the alternative to a Baja kit? Ive got one fitted to my 65 Sprint just because I wasnt aware there was anything else out there. I agree qualitys not great but it did 5K before the Cdi went and it wasnt a great deal of cash.
I just promised myself that if the new Cdi went (800miles in) that Id look around

Cheers Kevin

I suggest the PX style kits. [redacted] sells a nice one that we installed on a friend Sprint. Hasnt missed a beat and runs very nice.
http://[redacted].com/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=1464

or for about the same after shipping BGM makes the same type of setup.

The Bajaj units just are not worth the trouble

It's been available for a while. It's similar too the Vespatronic and pinasco fly tech. GP one tuning makes a nice fan for the Malossi

Neither of these are a benefit to a stock motor
