First off the Vespa is mine and I bought it new in 2005 and have had it since I've been a member on this forum.

The bike ran great before the key was stolen out of my car along with my dirty clothes and gym bag, no joke they took my dirty clothes. The one thing I knew I needed to get to was replacing the crank shaft. The reason is that the aftermarket CVT messed up the splines on the crank shaft.

It's been collecting dust for 5 years now and I don't have the desire to get into the project.

Does anyone have a spare motor laying around or does anyone want a project?

I've been out of the Vespa scene for some time and don't know what to price it at or maybe I should just give it away, by the way it's a 2005 Vespa GT200.

Maybe I should use it as a paperweight.....

I'm surprised a bad pulley could damage the crank. Usually they are aluminum, and the crank is hardened steel, so the pulley would gall up in the splines. Have you tried cleaning it out, or is it obvious the splines are buggered up?

I only say this as it seems to me this should be maybe a 2-3 hours fix, just cleaning up and replacing some inexpensive bits. Not a whole new engine.

As above, I bet the crank is fine. We often hear on MV from people who think they've buggered the crank - none have so far as far as I can remember.

It happens. I've seen it twice. One was GT200. Key probably aftermarket parts, if steel and the nut loosens splines are toast.

No variator is made out of steel, they're aluminium.
Most of the time what people think are stripped splines is splines filled with aluminium from the variator and it can be removed easily with a file.

Or a prick and a small hammer to tap the little bits out.
They can be tenacious little buggers, I've had aluminum smear into steel splines before, just not on a scooter.

Aftermarket part with steel insert. It happens. Why we stress on here not reusing the nut and proper torque technique.

it's the back plate of the roller housing that usually wastes the splines, and those are generally made of steel.

i've done four this year-- gts250 with a performance vario, gt200 stock vario just taken well beyond the service limit and abused, lx150 with a performance vario that was installed improperly, et4 stock and abused.

as for spinning the 1/2 pulley and smearing the splines that's old hat. i get one of those a month.

I had the unfortunate opportunity to have the splines wrecked on my LX150 some years ago after I incorrectly assembled things after a belt change. The wobble of the steel driven pulley did some catastrophic damage after 60 miles on the road. It required a new crank. On the bright side I traded up to a GTS.

I'm surprised to learn that anyone fits (let alone produces) a driving pulley with a steel insert for the splines. Having seen so many examples of the aluminium of an OEM driving pulley smear itself on the crank (especially after belt failure) it'd seem madness to invite further carnage.

I can't even see any advantage for a 'racing' pulley where such damage might be an acceptable hazard.

FWIW, the nada average on your bike is $2100 http://www.nadaguides.com/Motorcycles/2005/Vespa/VESPA-GT-200-197cc/Values

If you don't want to fool with it yourself, one way to handle it is to approach some local trade schools or community colleges and ask if they'd take it as a donation. You'd get some tax write off, if that helps you. Plus you'd be doing a good thing for the people in the class.

Why not contact Greasy and see if you could ship the motor to him for repair?
At least you will know it will be done right.
